Really well written article, Jennifer. I posted a comment, so I’ll wait and see if it gets an airing, otherwise I’ll post here that comment.

Just thought you might be interested in this site too: http://www.soilandhealth.org/03sov/0303critic/0303socialcriticism.html – yeah, weird, huh! What’s a site on soil and health got to do with freedom of choice?!

See what you think, and again, great article.

Well, nothing appears over there yet. Seems they don’t want me to be the first one to comment. Here’s what I wrote:

“It is worth noting that, often, men get left out of this equation of grieving after such an event as an abortion, as if they are immune to the pain and emotions that follow a decision to terminate the life of an unborn child.

So when Tankard-Reist and Tsitas talk about how women should or shouldn’t feel about, and impinge on the individuals right to do this in whatsoever way they see fit, there is an implied statement that this is how the partners of the women should behave too.

Often as not, partners are left out entirely of this debate, but then Tankard-Resit is an advocate for women and children (so long as they believe what she believes) and Tsitas is and advocate for women and children (so long as they believe what she believes)… No, wait, that can’t be right…

As you point out, the issue here isn’t the women (or men) themselves, but the self-appointed guardians of Moral Right and Moral Left blethering about how we should or shouldn’t live our lives. Our Madd Monk and JG are more of the same; proscriptive, moralist and repugnant.

The web is replete with “People [who] demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.*” We are turning into a ‘civilisation’ that doesn’t want debate, because debate requires real thinking. Instead, were becoming a civilisation of retorters, ineffectual rhetoric weavers.

It isn’t only women that are suffering from this ‘affliction’ of the Free Press – we’re all being dumped on. I’m shocked to hear that Tankard-Reist would gild the lily in anything she has to say; an Advocate doesn’t do such things.

In the same way you suggest the abortion narrative has more than two sides, it also has more than two parties involved, and yes, while many women will make the choice to terminate a foetus alone, many more do so in a consensual agreement with their partners. This shared experience/grieving/mending give both partners the opportunity to effectively move on.

You’re spot on, Jennifer. Neither Tankard-Reist or Tsitas address this,or other issues at all; they’re too busy fighting for dominance, fighting each other, and, in the process, throwing reasoned, logical and robust debate into disrepute. They both need a Point of View Gun fired at them, for clearly, they’ve lost the ability to see each others, or what is most important, the freedom to think and act according to our conscience.”
