Leonard Cohen. Democracy.

Leonard Cohen died yesterday, our time.

He died on the day the USA elected Donald Trump as its next President.

Cohen wrote this song called Democracy.

Listen, & weep.

Trump received 60 million votes; Clinton received 60.5 million votes. Another 90 million Americans didn’t even bother to vote.

    Democracy???

Vote, you arseholes – or don’t bother complaining.

Or as another thoughtful Canadian once sang,

    “No, no, no
Don’t it always seem to go,
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Til its gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.”

The naive discover that in real life
    The bad guy always wins.

Why is that? Why does the bad guy always win & what about justice?

Had a think about it that and accept a rebuke for fatalism.

I just read your new posting developing on what you sketched earlier and agree that capitulation is not an option.

I think what gives just now is some thing very 1940-ish the news is demoralising and the situation irredeemable.

In explanation of my pessimism I add these couple pf links out of many abroad at mo, because they are the sort of thing that you probably woke up to earlier even than me.

So things are dark. No excuse to pack it in though, if our betters 75 years ago had done that we would be back in the dark ages already.

Sorry, the second does not go directly to an article announcing that VP elect Pence is already demanding that the Xtian Right’s distorted understanding of Intelligent Design is employed as literalist Creation Theory for general curricula.

Most here would understand what a debauchment of syllogism is involved as theory does not prove actuality.

Good from the likes of Bertand Russell as an abstract discussion on possibility, but to suggest possibility is some how confirmed in the ricketty fantasies of fairy tale fundamentalist theology is really, as offensive in its way as Hitler’s unscrupulous racial theories, from the same reactionary stable of psychotic alibiing horse feathers

That may be a bigger worry than Trump. Just a heartbeat away is a rightist religious nutter. Say what we will about Trump, at least he appears to be a cynic about religion.

I think Pence present a whole new lot of dangers quite separate from those presented by Trump.

And I think he will wind up being the President sooner rather than later. the Republicans are saddled with Trump but all it takes is one more serious scandal and they will dump him quick smart. Pence gives them the incentive to do it.

I think Pence is a better bet by far for Republicans than is Trump. I’m guessing there’s be R support for any opportunity to impeach Donald & get Pence up.

I think a period of shock & grief is inevitable, PW, but beyond that we can’t capitulate.

I guess it comes down to this. Hypothetically, a bible sits on my bookshelf. Therefore this proves beyond contradiction God’s existence?

It has always struck me as singular that there is any of what we think of as existence/ reality is “here” at all and it has intrigued people going back far beyond Aristotle and Plato in the past with their unmoved mover, say, which is itself not much of an explanation, dodging the real questions of emergence and tangibility.
