Thank you to the Drum

4 Mar

After complaining the other day that the Drum was being one-sided in its representations of female sexuality, I have to take that all back seeing as Jonathan Green put up my oppositional piece “Pornify this” today.

Thank you, you really are Our ABC now.

Don’t be surprised if the Drum publishes a retort from MTR on Monday. That’s what happened at thePunch.

I don’t care, bring it on. The Drum comments show I said some things that really needed to be said, and I can say some more if I have to!

    G. Hoffman, chuck a Wikileaks and tell us what you know.

I know about the time, it’s stuck on US time, I don’t know why or how to fix it, I’m blonde.

No dye, it’s natural. Chuck a Wikileaks means reveal secrets – I thought you had some inside information on an MTR mole at the Drum

      Posts edited?
      No just not getting through.
I suspect there would be hundreds of posts getting binned.

You can also thank the ABC for new readers to your blog. While-I-didn’t-agree-with-everything-said etc etc it was a refreshingly interesting read and I’ll be following your blog at least until something shiny turns my attention elsewhere.

What makes your move so valuable is that, whilst not denying the reaities of the seedy and brutal underbelly of society, you’ve retreived sex as something to be considered for its positive and liberating aspects. Tankard Reists position makes money for her and her employers, but at the cost of a perpetuation of just that fear and ignorance that enable consumer capitalism to thrive regardless of any dislocation from reality.
If patriarchy and capitalism drive repression, an alternative way to undermine this repression is to recall the positive aspects of this normal human activity. If we are doomed to repression and subsequent disssatisfaction in order to prop up and perpetuate someone else’s system, we could do worse than tke a leaf out of the boo k of people like Bataille, Marcuse, Reich and others, in undermining repressive tolerance as the currently functioning mode of late capitalism.
Actually youve rehabiliitated Tankard Reist herself, if shes been individuated to a fearful view on sex it would be as unfortunate as it is commonplace. But am sure she doesn’t consider the darker more brutal Dworkinist aspects of sexual exploitation as a joke- unless she’s a nutbag- and we need not avoid joining her in calling for an end to the uglier aspects of violence in society.
But yes, her approach seems too simplistic, like waving your fist at a cat because it tries to stalk a bird. She’s got to consider society as a whole and how it operates, if shes dinkum about ending the suffering, rather than focussing on soft targets like”men” and the lingerie industry- that’s just Miranda Devinish “copy”.

Now that we have this all sorted out, back to serious news and real world events of deep meaning and significance for civilisation.
The Adelaide Advertiser, pinching from its tabloid sibling the Telegraph, reports that super model Heidi Klum removed here underwear for a”gift bag” at an oscar party held by Elton John.
Not only do we have the report, but sensational footage of Klum removing her undies, perhaps because she was too skinnily dress to provide anything else, perchance?
If my memory serves me correctly this is the most significant headline Ive seen in a national daily since the SMH reported, about two years ago, that Jennifer Hawkins has removed her knickers at a David Jones fashion parade, apparently for the laudable goal of getting the”line” right on a dress, apparently some thing fashionistas take very seriously.

And not a word about the law against women having therapeutic abortions in “democratic” Chile, meaning if a woman is carrying a child that cannot survive, she is forced to carry it to term or spontaneous abortion knowing what awaits her at the end.

Talk about fiddling while people burn….

Two things come to mind as to Chile. This is the former country of Alllende, the coup and Pinochet and his cruelties.

I then think of the solid phalanx of resistance in manistream media to journalists carrying some thing critical of Opus Dei?
Both political parties have strong catholic and some times protestant support and some times this is a good thing, as with a source of varieties to outlooks that enriches society and cultural discourse, even if metaphysics is not always a favourite.
Am in mind of that rather strange oerformance that ;s been going on in Queensland as to the young couple that went off shore and from memory acquired some ru 486 that they possibly self administered (obviously specificallly the young girl involved) as to whatever the result they ended up facing serious charges.
This in the den of that redoubt of left heroine Anna Bligh, who had to bow before a parliamentary refusal to end the situation for the young people. What was the background influence and from where it it combine to come?

    Hi again Jennifer.
    (Apricot jam instead of Nutella?
    Or guacamole?)

Here is some background,on my take of the ‘suspect’ Moderation.

I have have made the connection.

    Maybe others can.

No other logical reason for the dodgy filtration process.
Although my mind is always open to a ‘logical explanation’.

The ABC sure thinks they are squeaky clean.
    Guffaw.

That is very interesting and enlightening Hoffman, do you want me to put up your whole post?
No moderators working over the weekend, I see.
Somebody on Online Opinion just called me a victim blaming apologist for rapists who thinks grandmothers get raped because they don’t take responsibility for themselves.

Ah well. Opinion writing – it’s a dark and lonely job but someone’s got to do it.
