    The only thing he is doing in London is avoiding questions about Ashbygate. In fact, he was asked about it, and he ran away, saying he would only answer questions if the Ashby case was not asked about. Tony Abbott, you are a chicken. Buck buck buckaaaah.

        First report was that Abbott was standing by Brough even though he hadn’t read the judgment.
        Apparently he commented “Mal’s a friend of mine…” – and he was confident that he (Brough) “acted rightly at all times.”

    Why would photos of a possible leader always doing sport things be seen as proof of being exceptionally gifted in leading. Ok, perhaps on a bike or may be running through the surf but in politics? Is he going to give bikes to refugees or will he help them wade through pounding surf when a boat crashes against rocks? I just don’t see what is the attraction.
    Why do we hardly ever see photos of our leaders reading a book or in an art gallery?
    I would run a mile from any politician wearing a helmet or carrying boxes of tomatoes.
    I’ll make an exception on photos with potential leaders playing healthy outdoor chess sport.

    But how much longer this particular boxer will remain is unclear.
    What is clear is that the Abbott experiment has failed.
    He had until the middle of 2012 to force an election, and he failed.

    Only the stubborn polls have saved him to date. And that appears no longer to be the case :

        I don’t think Abbott will be having any last supper now, after the Swan Song delivered today.A coalition Christmas bonus.
        I cannot think of one economist who ever believed the promise, and similar numbers have said the decisions is months overdue.The damage for delay could be telling.

        No doubt Abbott will cash in.
        In fact most economists who spoke today actually said they had factored in a deficit,such was their respect for Swans foolhardy pipe dream.It says a lot when the number one money manager does the opposite to what all the others had almost unanimously decided.
        At least he has made Garrett and Wong look a smidgeon better.
        Poor Wayne.I guess the did it now so TA would not humiliate them in parliament.(When I say ‘they’ I mean whichever female front-bencher draws Tony’s short straw.)

            Faux Labor have enlisted Abbott to water-board them, while faux Labor water-boards us.
            It’s excruciating.I want (Australia needs) an election as early possible,now, because I know the result will be the same.It’s just that the period of torture will be shorter.
            We could wait for another ten Labor back-flips, but why?

      Uhlmann came across very poorly I thought. This is a lacklustre effort overall, and fails to capture the true character of the man who is perhaps the most transparently ambitious and narrowly focused among Australia’s current crop of political wannabes.

        It’s political fellatio.Uhlmann feigning a public absolution,of sorts.
        Uhlmann ‘appears’ tohave gone to great effort to lace the article with glimmers of hope and a positive spin for Abbott.It’s a way of nuancing the truth.Understate the bad shit(why- even leave a lot out), make it look like it’s not so bad,he has redeeming features, he can change,there is still hope etc.) Add the good bits, and voila! True blue PM material.
        I have a lot of problems with the actual ethics of Uhlmann and the ABC for even going there.
        I think it was anyone’s role but Uhlmann’s, for (what to me) are obvious reasons..
        My advice to people is the same advice I give to buying a second hand car.”If it is freshly painted,stay away.There will be rust,rot and decay just below the shiny surface.
        Soon enough the mould and smell will make you physically ill, and the whole think will leak like a sieve, and finally it will simply fall apart”

          I have to admit that since the last election I have purposely avoided politics (although most of the pertinent stuff filters through)

          On that note, I find Tony Abbott’s persona to resemble a cardboard cut-out. He appears to possess zilch in the way of any depth of character or statesmanship.

          It’s like someone hauls out the cardboard Tony Abbott, stands it up beside the subject at hand…..and…..nothing….

            Abbott stated that he got the job by default, he didnt really want the leadership but was asked to represent the last of the Howard club when the alternative group had Turnbull. It was an internal decision…..Now no one could accuse poor Tony of being the most glib speaker, he is more of an attack dog that a leader and he just isnt popular, but he’s about all the power block in the Liberal party have got in terms of someone that will stay loyal and on message to what the boys in the backroom want. So perhaps their party could use a little more marketing and get a prettier leader…..it worked for the Australian Democrats for ages when Natasha was leading….but look at the other possible choices – Pyne? Hockey? Its not a fine selection to choose from is it?

                  No flurry of self presentation, just deals with an aspect of the actual issue.

                  Labor should draw clear now that it has had the wit to drop the infantile Surplus fetish- the whole country is offering a relieved cheer, until after next election.

                  May the powers that be grant your(and Al’s) miraculous Christmas gift.
                  I think he forgets to factor in that those women (there are many) who don’t like Gillard, actually go well beyond ‘dislike’, just as those who dislike Abbott actually hate his guts.
                  I said yesterday that the voters will be so sick of Abbott, et al, nagging about the latest back-flip they will willingly turn off Labor, just to give their ears a rest.We can only wait and see, but I think Alan is thinking with his gold-plated NAB pen.
                  Either that or he has some ‘accurate’ polling somewhere which back his view.

                  I think your observation that Abbott’s camp has limited l/ship possibilities is true,but I also think that should the Libs choose NOT to give the likes of MT a run,it actually indicates they are not as greedy to get power, as FL were when they jettisoned the Ruddster.Or maybe they want to run on the “If you want a/holes, we have a wide range” ticket, ie, you get what you pay for.(The opposite to what happened for the current govt setup)
                  At the moment I think the pendulum just swung back to Abbott.He has an issue which falls under the heading broken promise, an attentive media, and as usual a blood thirsty electorate.Labor should never have accepted Abbott’s dare,kept the dare going etc, then there would be no back-down.It was/is stupid unnecessary and will cost them dearly.
                  Now Mohammed Abbott has Swan on the ropes and will pummel him relentlessly.Every single time Swan mentions budget,money,finance,economy he will get smashed.
                  FL had the whole Slipper/Brough issue to bury Abbott once and for all, and blew their chance.Ashby has now counter challenged in FWA and will no doubt keep going until it falls his way,further bolstering the Abbott camp.
                  (The Libs will not let it go and will be $$$ him, in one way or the other)
                  Please keep in mind that everything(every single Labor dilemma) since Gillard, is all of their own doing.And done while they stupidly turned their back on their beliefs and those of the real Labor flock.
                  Let’s see which insignificant players come out to bat for Swan in the next week or so.My tip is, it will be the ultra-under-performers, under duress (Wong/Ferguson/Garrett/ etc) and at the orders of the same gorillas who anointed Gillard-Howard.
                  If Swan gets too much attention causing the polls to drop,Labor will probably dump him and slip Wong in.That would be an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions.So I guess you can pencil it in.

    Whatever that alphabet soup is supposed to mean, the absolute desperation for power of this Coalition is not in doubt. They still seem to think Abbott might win.

    I hope they don’t realise in time that he is dead man walking, and has been for 6 months.

      The tide has turned for Labor. The latest Morgan poll has Labor leading the Coalition 52.5-47.5 on a 2PP basis. That is a comfortable win.

                  You’re the one who needs to answer the question as to why you want an “election now.”

                  BTW, as to me being a “Gillard gimp,” I admire Gillard greatly, especially for doing the right thing on climate change – eventually – and for her anti-misogyny speech; but she has made some bad decisions too, such as following Howard’s Pacific solution. However, Abbott’s Liberals are 20 times worse than Labor. For me, equal criticism of Labor and Liberals just doesn’t cut it.

                  Let’s get the issue of lying into persperctive. Do you think Gillard lied about introducing a “carbon tax” (because that seems to be the central issue for the Liberals).

                    No I don’t.She was dealt a hung parliament, and I think that whole argument is semantics, and the rest is history.Her other back-flips are just callous opportunist coalition policies, pushed by the faction f/wits.Stop trying to convince yourself I am a Liberal supporter,just because you don’t like to hear justified criticism.
                    As to the whole action on climate change,the current result as they may as well not have bothered.The worst polluters pay to get away with it, and are taxed and compensated at the same time.Renewable programs have been trashed,Solar panel industry destroyed.Native forests are being logged harder than ever,Private forests sold to OS multinationals etc/Even though these are state govt areas,the CWealth can easily adjust the rules to create better bottom lines for carbon issues.They have ticked off on so many more new coal mines we will be carbon positive for a century or more beyond today.(Thanks Fergy)
                    And please do not whinge about opposition inaction. They are not the ones in govt, nor are they the ones who have gone backwards.
