Beleagured and pasty-faced, Labor Senator Sam Dastyari yesterday flung himself at the feet of herds of rabid news hounds, and proceeded to deliver an almost incoherent mea culpa for his inexplicable acceptance of some $1670 plus change from the Chinese.
Yes, all right, he’s sorry, we get that, even though he’s probably only sorry he’s been caught. However, we don’t want his plate of green eggs and ham, we do not like them Sam I am. We want to know why Sam asked the Top Education organisation to pay his $1670 excess travel expenses, and Sam will not tell us.
He will not tell us in a boat, he will not tell us with a goat. He will not tell us here or there, he will not tell us anywhere.
While we wait until Sam’s motives are uncovered, as they most certainly will be eventually, acting Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce appeared on the ABC’s 7.30 Report last night looking as if he’d been mauled by a polar bear, or might have been if there were any left. Host Leigh Sales hastened to explain that he’s using cream to rid him of sun cancers, and then we got on with the process of distinguishing between I am Sam’s request for a personal handout from the Chinese, and the Chinese making large donations to political parties.
There is a huge difference, Barnaby argued. I don’t agree with his position. The Chinese aren’t giving money to Australian politicians, either singly or collectively, from a place of love and friendship. They, like any other gift giver and donor, hand money to politicians because they want and expect something in return. This is the case whether it’s a personal donation to Dastyari’s travel expenses, or a couple of million to a major party.
On the same theme, this bizarre tweet from Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz appeared in my time line yesterday:
Eric AbetzVerified account
@SenatorAbetz
I have long agreed with banning foreign donations but does @billshortenmp support similar foreign money ban for marriage plebiscite?
Abetz has not “long agreed” with banning foreign donations. Abetz has voted “moderately against” restricting political donations, frequently absenting himself when votes were counted.
As for the rest of the tweet, I can make no sense of it. Perhaps he’s suffering from irrelevance syndrome since Turnbull took away his portfolios.
Or perhaps, as Ben Pobjie suggested to me on Twitter, Chinese billionaires are surreptitiously supporting marriage equality in Australia.
If the alleged support was for the noes, I’m absolutely certain Abetz wouldn’t be complaining.
In conclusion they’re all, one way or another, trying to persuade us to eat green eggs and ham.
We will not eat it in a box, We will not eat it with a fox….We do not like it, Sam I am, we do not like green eggs and ham.
Pesky Chinese. Mum always reckoned great grand dad said, beware of the Chinese, they will come down take it all over. Thank Dubya for ruining the USA if they ever do and also remember that the US, for example, would never stoop to anything as unethical as offering bribes and currying influence in a foreign country (let alone bomb it back to the Stone Age).
Sam’s crimes are no doubt singular in their breadth and scope.
Yet, here is a funny thing:
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/foreign-minister-julie-bishops-links-to-chinese-political-donors-20160823-gqzauy.html
Not just patsied Sam, but Miz Julie, can you beleive it?
Why, I expected the press and Meeja to be alive with more on that than just a SMH article. Glad it is not a beat up, if Barnaby “Cubby Creek” Joyce and Erica “Gunns” call for the execution of Dastyari for fishy dealings, it is only to remove the sole black sheep from a pure flock.
I think the real problem is that the political system at both national and international levels is stuffed and has been stuffed quite deliberately by various components of the Oligachy here and in various places off shore.

Ssh, we can’t let new get in the way of media trivia and pathetic bleat ups. Now if they wanted to attack Sam for voting against a Royal Commission into the abuse and torture of children I would cheer, but the media scum didn’t even bother to hear the motion in parliament, let alone report on it.

Yep, it’s an abdication of responsibiity and retreat into denial and escape in the face of complexity and info denied through much of msm…”deflectng” as Dr Wilson might say.
Society wide; vertical and horizontal.
Sometimes there are small wins, incremental things on the way, though.
I’m thinking of Labor announcing a retreat from its support of Turnbull’s dole cuts, a sort of topic you are well aware of given the situation of someone close to you
Now, next step from Labor would be an announcement that the rest of the folk at Manus and Nauru are retrieved quickly to here from there, at least, then a major review to do with wider people movement issues.
Fingers crossed, am not holding breath, perhaps if they win the election and have finally learned something from the last decade and more, a post election announcement, if not sooner, would get a more realistic approach up.

PW,
If you think Labor will back off on off shoring refugees while One Nation is rampant in the senate you’re dreaming. They will weld their arses to the fence dodging the challenge.
The thing about our politicians is they are now 100% political and minus 100% human. All of them.Professional snouts. The retirement village for those who chose sloth over action.
It’s a recent paradigm, but it’s a permanent one, without some sort of citizen revolt. Can’t see it in my lifetime.

Fairly obvious, isn’t it? But why can’t he be more accurate with the mea culpa. Thus:
‘I had expenses over and above my allowances, and I told my hosts that “I will be out of pocket for $1600” and they said “That’s not a problem, we’ll cover it”. In hindsight I should not have accepted their offer.’
Is that so hard?

Well, the said Dastyari has now resigned. Quite ridiculous, as he was not a minister.
Oppositional responsibility???

The strategic reason for resigning:
Conroy says he has a list of government ministers doing exactly the same as Dastyari.
Labor can now say “Our shadow minister resigned; how can you, Minister X, do less??”

I can channel Hypo’s response to a comment of mine, just above re hopes that refugee policy is changed and also others who feel bitter about Australian attitudes toward others while this news story I’ve just watched is fresh in my mind.
Actually, two stories.
The first involved a man who has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma contracted from a James Hardie asbestos mine on or near an aboriginal settlement in NSW..details seem not yet up for Googling. The Mundine relative is unable to sue because of an agreement with Hardies that victims are not allowed to sue. The grief was bad and I had to turn away before it quite finished.
Turning to ABC news24, came almost immediately some thing even more sinister:
http://www.sbs.com.au/nitv/nitv-news/article/2016/01/19/death-our-brother-and-son-was-not-natural-death-family-question-indigenous-mans
That NITV link is an early story, but the ABC report carried close details of David Dungay’s death that had my toes curling, firstly for the brutality, consequently from that, Palm Island and Mulrunji Doomadgee and finally, beyond cowardly as-usual dishonest dealings concerning the case from authorities.
Now there is an inquest..a filthy boil bursts and it ought to shame this country to its bootstraps.

But Syria..a filthy proxy war between the rival US and Russian bloc for the most valuable oily desert real estate in the world; is Big Game politics on a mammoth scale.
One of the reasons Hillary Clinton can’t kill off Trump is because of the dumps of Wikileaks files recently that perhaps got closer to what the former US Secretary of State was really up to in Libya, when that country got smashed up and how THAT stupidity is still playing out in Syriana.
