Today, the first sitting day of a new parliament, thirteen, yes thirteen coalition backbenchers defied their Prime Minister and called for an amendment to Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act that would see the words “insult” and “offend” removed.
Thirteen white Liberal backbenchers want to be legally permitted to racially offend and insult. So desperately do they want this that they have defied their Prime Minister and their Attorney-General, both of whom undertook to leave Section 18C as it is, and went to the election with this undertaking.
These thirteen backbenchers are fighting for the right to offend and insult specifically on the basis of race and ethnicity. They aren’t fighting for the right to offend and insult in general: that right isn’t under threat. They want to racially offend and insult. They are fighting to racially offend and insult. They are risking the cohesion of their party in order to be able to racially offend and insult.
Think about that.

The world we inhabit has become a frightening place, or have I only just woken up to this? I’m English, I don’t live in Australia and I’m shocked at how quickly racial hatred is growing, especially on Social media, therefore I’m astounded at how the thirteen backbenchers, who were chosen to represent the welfare of the inhabitants of Australia are fuelling the hatred by deliberately choosing not to represent the welfare of so many.

I think the problem is largely innate. Humans, as a tribal species, don’t like diversity in general. They prefer to be around people like themselves (one reason you won’t get many people who support removing 18C in the comments here, for example). All Western countries, however, have been pushing diversity for decades. It was pretty easy to cover up the social problems because there was also plenty of money to go around. The money has run out, meaning the social problems can no longer be adequately papered over, meaning that people are reverting to their tribal ways and looking for ‘the other’ to blame. In practice, this is not all that different in intent to Mugabe expelling white farmers.

As this turgid Freedom of Speech ‘debate’ grinds on, I am yet to hear anyone suggest that common courtesy is all that is needed when dealing with other people.
Courteous people know how to behave themselves. They are more like to be able to exercise the freedom of speech without insulting or offending other people.

Sadly only too many people get their kicks by abusing others, and of course anonymity makes it easy, and the use of many aliases on one site helps the insults to fly about….

When you are a profoundly nasty person, then it’s implicit in your being, in your mental make-up, to offend and insult, and of course you’ll direct this towards anyone who is different, someone who is brown , black, yellow, anyone who has a foreign accent, and if they are Muslims as well, then you got jackpot….
It does not help that you a good sportsman, a good footballer, if you are black you are just another monkey for these people.
Laws to prevent this might help, but the only real effective way is education, sadly with adults it’s too late. Let’s start with the little ones….

I take you have become familiar with the story of a young woman in hot water for throwing a banana in a tantrum of frustration at match-winning Adelaide AFL star Eddie Betts.
Fined about five hundred and I think kicked out of matches for a long long time for that act of sheer stupidity but did not strike this writer as the sharpest tool on the rack from the little i saw of her.
Ports are an old working class wharfie team dating back nearly a hundred and fifty years so it is a bit westerner subs-ish, its supporter base includes a substantial number of people who speak directly and may not observe certain nuances and niceties as may be found in a more genteel eastern suburbs setting.
Where to start ?
Education is at the core of so many things in so many ways. When I was a kid we went to state secular or “cafflick” state schools and there a few nob schools for ponces we only knew vaguely of and found disliking and being disliked back. But basically we were all lumped in together and left to get on with it.
What I wonder is, the ability to adapt to both the complex issues of living today while establishing the means for what seemed obvious only a generation back; a egalitarian, reasoning society getting in touch with its own feelings.

The incident happened right at the climax of a very hard local derby..Eddie had swung it Adelaide’s way and the frustration was palpable with the Port supporters who are a bit like Colling wood supporters- defeat is always anathema.
Adelaide is a strange place, a bit of a monoculture in some ways. It is an example of induced provincialism.

One other thing. Ive always found the example of the Roman Colosseum interesting. Here the plebs, legitiimisers through voting, of the Republic, then Empire, see barbarian symbols defeated and destroyed, reinforcing the sense of being at the civilised centre of things, holding back the forces of darkness as a mission.
But sport did not end brutality at Rome and it hasn;t ended it in our era. Rome still did butchery conquering provinces and in our time the real warfare has been offshored to places like Africa and the Middle East, as suspicious looking fuzzy-wuzzy others are wiped out in the millions and those left brought to account for their defects by the exceptionalist culture controlling the weapons and propaganda.

One thing I’ve always noticed is the behaviour of fans. There is so much vicarious violence on the field in Rugby and Rugby League that the fans leave satisfied, even if beaten. Soccer fans on the other hand are often extremely frustrated and combative. And they riot.

Plant theft is endemic throughout civilised society and this is a crime that often involves subversive female behaviour.
I remember being out for a walk with my mum and her friend when the friend decided to pilfer some thing from a yard. I stood back and watched as a curtain moved in the house, then a some what unamused individual came out to find out what it was Pat thought she was up to.
I was well out of the way and could do little in my state, virtually curled up in a ball and fit to burst with laughter.

You get no argument from me as to out comes. It is nasty and thus I am wondering, what are the factors that make sport in our time problematic. Do we think of going to the football as recreational and an expression of community solidarity (esp imho when ALL aussies and outsiders also, are included), a place where in a lad or lassie can do well regardless of race, a s we see with Eddiire other skilled practitioners of sport and a number of migrant players these days, including several people of African descent.
To what extent are other factors involved?
For example, what do we see when we compare footy day to ritualised gatherings such as happens in places like Nuigini where the clans gather for a sing-sing. If you are ignorant enough to dismiss sing-sings as displays of human folly, what will you think of westerners off to sports events?
Maybe culture is like the Cosmic Noise..ubiquitous to the point it is not heard. Yet it has the magical capacity to make dills out of people, as we saw with the young woman and as we agree, things look far different to the ideal out in the real world of dusty aboriginal settlements and off shore battlefields.
What is the real role of culture and how does a culture operate with a society, to what end, if any eg how is it that racist messages proliferate as a symptom and what we consider to be ignorance held as a virtue in other sections of society?

To be fair to the Liberals (much as it pains me to do so), the senators pushing for the change via the proposed Racial Discrimination Amendment Bill 2016 are led by, no surprises here, Cory Bernardi. He has support from the following senators:
* 8 other Liberals;
* 2 x Nationals;
* 4 x Pauline Hanson One Nation;
* Derryn Hinch;
* Bob Day – Family First; and
* David Leyonhjelm – Liberal Democratic Party.
If it fails in the Senate, it’s hard to see it going further unless Brandis and Turnbull have a change of heart.
Are there other Liberals in the House of Reps who support this?

OK, it’s nice that we’re all agreeing. But “offending” may well be the side effect, the collateral damage, in an exercise of free speech, in vigorous debate. So far, it has not been a severe impediment to debate, but the word “offend” appears too broad, a word that can be too broadly interpreted, and at times it will depend upon the mood, experience, prejudices, perhaps even the malice of prosecutors and a magistrate. Of course a bad decision can be overturned on appeal, but in the meantime damage is done to reputations and livelihoods of those accused.
The risks to freedom of speech are not just an abstraction. Real people can be severely affected by someone else’s idea of being offended.

The other thing was the big African playing for North Melbourne who kicked some of their goals, Majak Daw. But did I notice a low level of booing for the fella. In the end, I found my self willing his kicks for goal to go through to shut the miserable bastards up

Most of the boos (as usual) were saved for Lindsay Thomas,fave of the redneck race patrol.(In the past) He has done some questionable things and had angry outbursts,but there is no doubt he is singled out for racist treatment by afl crowds, and regular shit decisions by umpires who obviously let race based crowd noise drive some of their decisions. Or they could very well just be racist umpires.The chances are certainly skewed that way.
Thomas was disallowed a free kick early, or given one against him early ( I forget which, such is the commonness of it) That set the bar for his treatment all match.I can see why he reacts like he does.It will be interesting to see if the footballer who kicked him in the knee is rubbed out for 3 or more weeks.Any less and it’s another ‘gollywog voodoo doll’ found in the AFL locker IMHO.

Hartigan is the player you mean and 3 weeks would be the minimum as far as I am concerned also.

It was the Norths that started it, with them heavying Eddy before the match even started then trying to wipe out little Charlie Cameron, another aboriginal player in the first moments when the first goal was scored. Set the tone, that did.

As for your content, there’s a mile of difference between clashing on the field etc and racist tactics by fans and compliant umpires. Player on player racism is rare these days.And it’s 99% one way at that.
