Why do 13 coalition backbenchers need to racially offend & insult?

30 Aug

EighteenC

Today, the first sitting day of a new parliament, thirteen, yes thirteen coalition backbenchers defied their Prime Minister and called for an amendment to Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act that would see the words “insult” and “offend” removed.

Thirteen white Liberal backbenchers want to be legally permitted to racially offend and insult. So desperately do they want this that they have defied their Prime Minister and their Attorney-General, both of whom undertook to leave Section 18C as it is, and went to the election with this undertaking.

These thirteen backbenchers are fighting for the right to offend and insult specifically on the basis of race and ethnicity. They aren’t fighting for the right to offend and insult in general: that right isn’t under threat. They want to racially offend and insult. They are fighting to racially offend and insult. They are risking the cohesion of their party in order to be able to racially offend and insult.

Think about that.

The world we inhabit has become a frightening place, or have I only just woken up to this? I’m English, I don’t live in Australia and I’m shocked at how quickly racial hatred is growing, especially on Social media, therefore I’m astounded at how the thirteen backbenchers, who were chosen to represent the welfare of the inhabitants of Australia are fuelling the hatred by deliberately choosing not to represent the welfare of so many.

Australia was built on the back of the so called scum of Europe, criminals and the greedy minions of the crown.(RWNJ Back bench types) Plus they sent all the social offal they wanted hidden away. For a microscopic nano second of time space and history, the populous appeared human and humane, but we soon got back on top of that hiccup.

The indigenous population want their time again.

I think the problem is largely innate. Humans, as a tribal species, don’t like diversity in general. They prefer to be around people like themselves (one reason you won’t get many people who support removing 18C in the comments here, for example). All Western countries, however, have been pushing diversity for decades. It was pretty easy to cover up the social problems because there was also plenty of money to go around. The money has run out, meaning the social problems can no longer be adequately papered over, meaning that people are reverting to their tribal ways and looking for ‘the other’ to blame. In practice, this is not all that different in intent to Mugabe expelling white farmers.

Too many humans, period. It all gravitates to that factor.Population amplifies the negative.

          But re Zim,
Mugabe is not the norm,so I see your comments likely to be a colour based fishing exercise. The reality for Zimbabwe is white invaders profited (for decades) from enslaved traditional owners, and the white slave masters built walls instead of bridges. It was always going to implode and the Rhodesian experiment was doomed to fail.
Now the ex pats look back from Australia and see the ‘Mugabe misery’ as some sort of Schadenfreude ‘I told you so’ victory for colonial domination.

          Meh,What goes around…..
          It did.
Ex pats should leave their race based prejudices at our borders, but (IME) they rarely do.This factor should measure their entire suitability for immigration.
We have more than enough home grown racists.

Why do they need to insult and intimidate?

Because they are lacking in the cognitive capacity and social skills to communicate meaningfully with other humans. Brandis is a classic example- unable to communicate beyond compulsive acts of stentorian rudeness.

        I agree.

Lack of self-esteem always lurks in the shadows.

Why else would anyone consider it a human right to ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ another person if not to enhance one’s own opinion of self.

As this turgid Freedom of Speech ‘debate’ grinds on, I am yet to hear anyone suggest that common courtesy is all that is needed when dealing with other people.

Courteous people know how to behave themselves. They are more like to be able to exercise the freedom of speech without insulting or offending other people.

Sadly only too many people get their kicks by abusing others, and of course anonymity makes it easy, and the use of many aliases on one site helps the insults to fly about….

When you are a profoundly nasty person, then it’s implicit in your being, in your mental make-up, to offend and insult, and of course you’ll direct this towards anyone who is different, someone who is brown , black, yellow, anyone who has a foreign accent, and if they are Muslims as well, then you got jackpot….

It does not help that you a good sportsman, a good footballer, if you are black you are just another monkey for these people.

Laws to prevent this might help, but the only real effective way is education, sadly with adults it’s too late. Let’s start with the little ones….

I take you have become familiar with the story of a young woman in hot water for throwing a banana in a tantrum of frustration at match-winning Adelaide AFL star Eddie Betts.

Fined about five hundred and I think kicked out of matches for a long long time for that act of sheer stupidity but did not strike this writer as the sharpest tool on the rack from the little i saw of her.

Ports are an old working class wharfie team dating back nearly a hundred and fifty years so it is a bit westerner subs-ish, its supporter base includes a substantial number of people who speak directly and may not observe certain nuances and niceties as may be found in a more genteel eastern suburbs setting.

      Where to start ?

Education is at the core of so many things in so many ways. When I was a kid we went to state secular or “cafflick” state schools and there a few nob schools for ponces we only knew vaguely of and found disliking and being disliked back. But basically we were all lumped in together and left to get on with it.

What I wonder is, the ability to adapt to both the complex issues of living today while establishing the means for what seemed obvious only a generation back; a egalitarian, reasoning society getting in touch with its own feelings.

          Yeah, it was a classic…bucolic.

The incident happened right at the climax of a very hard local derby..Eddie had swung it Adelaide’s way and the frustration was palpable with the Port supporters who are a bit like Colling wood supporters- defeat is always anathema.

Adelaide is a strange place, a bit of a monoculture in some ways. It is an example of induced provincialism.

From here it is social anthropology. Sport is the meeting place for the tribes, a space where warfare is reduced to the symbolic victory of the sporting team and its vindication of identity.

Its a space where people go to work out the frustrations of the working week, but there is certain tacit code involved, involving what’s said or not said and the young woman transgressed it by dummy spitting and personalising her anger, directing it at Betts,

She will be browned off for letting Crows fans see her dummy spit..you don’t give ’em the satisfaction when you are copping it. So will Port, since the incident is corrosive of Ports image as a black fella friendly working persons team.

One other thing. Ive always found the example of the Roman Colosseum interesting. Here the plebs, legitiimisers through voting, of the Republic, then Empire, see barbarian symbols defeated and destroyed, reinforcing the sense of being at the civilised centre of things, holding back the forces of darkness as a mission.

But sport did not end brutality at Rome and it hasn;t ended it in our era. Rome still did butchery conquering provinces and in our time the real warfare has been offshored to places like Africa and the Middle East, as suspicious looking fuzzy-wuzzy others are wiped out in the millions and those left brought to account for their defects by the exceptionalist culture controlling the weapons and propaganda.

One thing I’ve always noticed is the behaviour of fans. There is so much vicarious violence on the field in Rugby and Rugby League that the fans leave satisfied, even if beaten. Soccer fans on the other hand are often extremely frustrated and combative. And they riot.

              This is not a coincidence.

Safe too, hardly any crime, leave your doors open kind of place.

I woke up this morning to find out that my three beautifully flowering plants had been taken, and not just the plants but their very heavy ceramic containers. There must have been two adults, schoolkids might rip the flowers off, but are not willing to carry heavy pots around…

I’m furious, I’m going to put effing prickly Cacti on my front porch table, install cameras and lights, it’s pity it’s still too cold for stinging Nettles…

Plant theft is endemic throughout civilised society and this is a crime that often involves subversive female behaviour.

I remember being out for a walk with my mum and her friend when the friend decided to pilfer some thing from a yard. I stood back and watched as a curtain moved in the house, then a some what unamused individual came out to find out what it was Pat thought she was up to.

I was well out of the way and could do little in my state, virtually curled up in a ball and fit to burst with laughter.

Helvi, you could buy a couple of vipers and put them in the pots ready for the next lot.

She looked like and clearly was an R SOUL!
No-one deliberately takes a banana to the footy for a premeditated act and waits all day for the player to align with her throw zone. She was arcing up racist tirades for weeks and singled out Betts all through the match. The apologia is pathetic, the AFL are weak and insipid, as predicted the issue impacted on the Crows who were flattened the following game.Betts hardly touched the ball. The woman is an indication of the scum that floats to the surface.Over in WA the vigilantes get away with running over and killing an indigenous kid.The offender only charged with manslaughter. The same police force recently charged 2 indigenous offenders for murder for the belated death of a white female victim of a violent robbery gone wrong. The offenders actually dropped the woman at a hospital.
The 14 YO indigenous kid was left to die where he was ran down (apparently).
Police say racism is not involved, despite the social media brags preceding and following this event, and previous 4×4 chases trying to take out MC riders.

Bernardi,Hanson et al want Muslim face coverings banned (nuns OK) and white pro ethnic cleanser protesters faces allowed to be covered with or without 18c (At least I have not YET heard him call for peace or open faces at protests)

          2 laws?

You get no argument from me as to out comes. It is nasty and thus I am wondering, what are the factors that make sport in our time problematic. Do we think of going to the football as recreational and an expression of community solidarity (esp imho when ALL aussies and outsiders also, are included), a place where in a lad or lassie can do well regardless of race, a s we see with Eddiire other skilled practitioners of sport and a number of migrant players these days, including several people of African descent.

To what extent are other factors involved?

For example, what do we see when we compare footy day to ritualised gatherings such as happens in places like Nuigini where the clans gather for a sing-sing. If you are ignorant enough to dismiss sing-sings as displays of human folly, what will you think of westerners off to sports events?

Maybe culture is like the Cosmic Noise..ubiquitous to the point it is not heard. Yet it has the magical capacity to make dills out of people, as we saw with the young woman and as we agree, things look far different to the ideal out in the real world of dusty aboriginal settlements and off shore battlefields.

What is the real role of culture and how does a culture operate with a society, to what end, if any eg how is it that racist messages proliferate as a symptom and what we consider to be ignorance held as a virtue in other sections of society?

I don’t know if we see human behaviour through anything but rose coloured glasses. I think the woman is in a funny way a victim also, slave to processes that have her acting out the goose role in a a sort of pantomime.

As the Socratics said, the unconsidered life is scarcely worth the consideration and I allow some pity in myself for people like the woman as well as the overt victims we read about bashed to death in police cells. and if she has problems what would I find if I had a closer look within myself, too?

              You’re too generous.
The woman had a choice.Betts did not.

She is just a base racist, who is so comfortable in a warm cosy racist country, in an arena where she used her right to prove how racist she is.She was rewarded with the usual chat show infamy.
Her so called remorse is a veneer of opportunistic bullshit, so she avoids the arse kicking she has rightfully earned, but never received.

Pathetic but typical MSM, AFL and Port supporter base.
The race based problem is getting worse and is set to balloon,on and off the field.
Howard enabled greed, and kept the WAP on the simmer cycle, so Abbott, Bernardi,Bolt,Jones et al could enable hate and racism.
Don Dale, police behaviors, dodgy R Commisioners chosen, lies and cover ups exposed etc.

Hansonism has re-emerged and now the overt vigilante stuff has begun.

To be fair to the Liberals (much as it pains me to do so), the senators pushing for the change via the proposed Racial Discrimination Amendment Bill 2016 are led by, no surprises here, Cory Bernardi. He has support from the following senators:
    * 8 other Liberals;
    * 2 x Nationals;
    * 4 x Pauline Hanson One Nation;
    * Derryn Hinch;
    * Bob Day – Family First; and
    * David Leyonhjelm – Liberal Democratic Party.

If it fails in the Senate, it’s hard to see it going further unless Brandis and Turnbull have a change of heart.

They have been forced to break cover, to reveal their actual selves and what bystanders see is a hopelessly contaminated group of people who gave up attempting a real understanding of how society works for slogans and apathetic acceptance of , illogical dogmas.

What a mechanism is a culture and society that can mass produce damaged people, either through spiteful damage, as is the case with aborigines or the processes of the given politics in dumbing down the wider masses.

Hypo, ABC got it all wrong when they re-named Fathers Day ‘Hismas’, I’d call it ‘Hismess’ instead. You blokes have to stop impregnating women…

Oops, I too got it all wrong, it’s us women, who want the babies, so ABC can call Mothers Day ‘Hermess’…

No one loves reptiles, eh, men.

The amount spent of Fathers Day is a trickle compared to Mothers Day and the only thing money spent is self interested; are tools for home renovation and gardening, which bite into sports time, this ill-spent squander eventually pulled by indirect means from His hard earned paypacket.

Either that or handkerchiefs, socks and underwear- just what I always wanted.

A bloke grows a thick skin to ward off the visiccisitudes of life, the cruel and infamous blows to sensibility and sensitivity…I now retire to my shed in deep contemplation of women’s and children’s inhumanity to men.

Him: They just kept hammering on their tissue box covers, they did not talk to me.

Me: Did you talk to them? You are not traumatised by your partner…?

Him: Yes but I was the new one; they all looked a bit boring…

Me: A bit boring like the men at the Labor Party meeting. Why don’t you find out where your new ‘friends’, the Greenies, have their meetings. You MIGHT find them interesting…?

Him: They all look too young, and they are mainly MEN.

          I’m speechless…

            Men’s sheds?? pffffttt!!

What you can learn from losers who have been bluffed out of their homes; THEIR houses, by crafty and mercenary partners…flip round the lughole.

A REAL shed is a solitudinous place, old furniture with secured draws where the Playboy catalogue is housed, very old spider webs and dust, ashtrays full of ancient butts, an venerable ghetto-blaster with Metallica on tap, flagons, little bags with vegetable matter…

Here, in the company of one or two close fellow travellers or more likely oneself, one may fulminate eternally on life’s calumnies, free of heckling contradiction, at least till the Trouble and Strife has cooked dinner.

As for expecting a direct, honest answer from any male, (other than my dear father, who is no more), I gave it up a long ago…
Our neighbour on the farm was an old Aussie handy-man, who called his wife ‘the cook’.

Truly amazing that anyone is surprised at this government fucking up.

They are the same Keystone Kops government that Abbott tried to lead in 2014 and 2015, with a bit of tarting up thanks to the arm-waver extraordinaire, Mooka Turnbull.

OK, it’s nice that we’re all agreeing. But “offending” may well be the side effect, the collateral damage, in an exercise of free speech, in vigorous debate. So far, it has not been a severe impediment to debate, but the word “offend” appears too broad, a word that can be too broadly interpreted, and at times it will depend upon the mood, experience, prejudices, perhaps even the malice of prosecutors and a magistrate. Of course a bad decision can be overturned on appeal, but in the meantime damage is done to reputations and livelihoods of those accused.

The risks to freedom of speech are not just an abstraction. Real people can be severely affected by someone else’s idea of being offended.

    Discuss.

No-one should be afforded the protection of a law which allows them to play the race card to cause harm or to claim superiority.
No-one has made a case or even explained why they need the right to racially abuse /offend/etc.
I will review my support for the status quo when the camp for removal has some quantity of intelligence in its midst.
Not one of the proponents of the ‘fucked up 13’ has made ANY case, nor have they articulated what it is they cannot say now, as the law currently stands.
This country does not need a formalised hate catalyst in the form of a bullies permission to bully.
The infantile claim that people choose to be offended shows how Neanderthal our proponents are.

Choose not to racial offend. Is it so hard for these empty vessels to actually behave accordingly in the role they have as responsible politicians. This argument is what the thin end of a toxic wedge looks like.

Choose not to racial offend.Expose and condemn those who do.Support their victims.

No one can claim the ABC is a lefty news org any more. The morning news line up is practically all Catholic these days .Virginia Trioli,Micheal Rowland and Paul Kennedy.AFAIK, all RC.Wonderful secularism Aunty. And now a multi episode Liberal Party rewriting of (more) history whereby John Howard gleefully (Best man for job) ‘gratifies’ the ghost of Bob Menzies.Well may you save god save the queen,b’cos nothing will save the ABC.
RIP any chance of balance .Thank goodness they have fiction.(other than the Howard kind)

Agreed. The leftist tendencies have been rooted out over the last 20 years; as I have often said, it is Howard’s enduring legacy. He set out to impose rightists on the Board and in the management, they (naturally) to select like-minded people to program and present “the news” in particular. The process is almost complete.

It is to the enduring shame of Kevin Rudd that he did not sack the Board and management in 2008, to reverse the process. We will suffer the results for many years.

I have no idea how he manages to get through a single day without a child minder permanently at foot. And anyone who ‘deliberately’ voted for him has a sound case to claim a reverse lobotomy (full cost) on Medicare.

Most of the boos (as usual) were saved for Lindsay Thomas, fave of the redneck race patrol.(In the past) He has done some questionable things and had angry outbursts, but there is no doubt he is singled out for racist treatment by afl crowds, and regular shit decisions by umpires who obviously let race based crowd noise drive some of their decisions. Or they could very well just be racist umpires. The chances are certainly skewed that way.
Thomas was disallowed a free kick early, or given one against him early ( I forget which, such is the commonness of it) That set the bar for his treatment all match.I can see why he reacts like he does.It will be interesting to see if the footballer who kicked him in the knee is rubbed out for 3 or more weeks.Any less and it’s another ‘gollywog voodoo doll’ found in the AFL locker IMHO.

Thomas had a dog of a match…very dangerous player.

In fact, that is a pretty accurate posting.

Hartigan is the player you mean and 3 weeks would be the minimum as far as I am concerned also.

I thought they were random and individual and assigned per individual eml address?

As for your content, there’s a mile of difference between clashing on the field etc and racist tactics by fans and compliant umpires. Player on player racism is rare these days. And it’s 99% one way at that.

This Jerry Attrick guy (looks like Gerard
