The Senator, the camper vans & The Chaser

fiat car ad

Some of you may remember back in May this year there was a swell of outrage against Wicked Campers, the organisation that spray paints its vehicles with slogans such as: A wife: an attachment you screw on the bed to get the housework done; Inside every princess there’s a slut waiting to get out; The best thing about a blow job is five minutes of silence, and so on.

The slogans are usually accompanied by cartoonish illustrations of disembodied breasts, Snow White sucking a penis… you get the picture.

Free speech advocate and libertarian Senator David Leyonhjelm was scathing in his criticism of those who protested the vans:

“If you want to take offense that’s your choice and you’ve got to remember it’s a choice and other people make different choices.

Most of the statements I’ve read from the vans are able to be interpreted in a couple of ways and they require a degree of sophistication to know what they’re getting at.”

Leyonhjelm told the ABC Wicked made funny statements, “which obviously have sexual connotations.”

“But surprise, surprise sexual connotations are part of life. You need to be a particularly wowserish type of person to not find them funny,” he said.

But surprise, surprise ABC TV’s The Chaser recently parked a van outside Leyonhjelm’s residence that bore the slogan The best thing about oral sex from David Leyonhjelm – 5 mins of silence, and the Senator has gone ballistic.

When called on his perceived hypocrisy by Melinda Tankard Reist, an anti-Wicked advocate, Leyonhjelm tweeted to her: If you don’t understand free speech STFU. This a problematic prescriptive if ever there was one: the right to free speech isn’t supposed to be contingent on whether or not you fully understand what you are saying about free speech, or anything else, for that matter.

It is true that the Senator didn’t call for the Chaser to be silenced, he merely complained vociferously about their intrusion into his street. He also claimed the slogan was “homophobic,” a complaint I find quite baffling unless of course he doesn’t know about men orally pleasuring women.

My Twitter friend Kate Galloway recently wrote this post on sexist language in public discourse in response to Eddie McGuire’s expressed desire to drown journalist Caroline Wilson. What is it with some men and their desire to drown us? Alan Jones wanting to send Julia Gillard in a chaff bag out to sea, and of course that legendary test to see if we’re witches, perhaps from which this obsession with drowning us stems: tie us to a stool and drop us in the river and if we drown we’re witches and if we survive we’re witches, so burn us. Yeah.

I think I’m a woman with a sophisticated sense of humour. I can also laugh myself silly with a four-year-old. But I find absolutely nothing humorous in the Wicked van slogans, or in Eddie McGuire and his mates cackling hideously over the possibility of drowning Caroline Wilson. Nor  do I accept the apparently unassailable belief amongst some men and women that it is fine to say things about women that if said about any other human group would be thought crass, unacceptable, and even illegal.

There’s no right not to be offended, but there is the right to speak about what offends. A frequent response to expressed offence is an accusation of political correctness (gone mad, for added emphasis), or a judgement that one has “over-reacted.” These are  attempts to derail any discussion of the offensive nature of the commentary, and focus instead on the offended person’s alleged weakness and lack of humour. Such attempts at derailing should be treated with the contempt they deserve. As a general rule, people who make sexist comments don’t take kindly to being challenged and their first line of defence is attack.

Leyonhjelm is outraged that The Chaser’s stunt upset his wife, yet he was seemingly oblivious to the upset caused to women, girls, and men who had to attempt to explain to their children the slogans on the van next to their tent. One grandfather round these parts took to every van he saw with a can of black spray paint, so fed up was he with having to see the denigrating and misogynist garbage every time he went on the highway with his grandchildren. But according to the Senator, this man is an unsophisticated wowser with no sense of humour who has chosen to be offended.

Well, Senator, if the tiara fits…

Great article. Agree 100 percent. Leyonhjelm is a guy who likes to churn out so-called libertarian policies for other people to cop, but now it turns out that when faced with the effects of one of his own policies, he’s not all that keen any more.

Hugh Mackay, involved in qualitative social research for several decades and one of Australia’s most perceptive commentators, wrote in his book “What Makes Us Tick”: “Nothing clarifies a policy like being on the receiving end of it”. Gotcha, David, and good on you, Chaser Boys.

We need to remember that Leyonhjelm advocates for people to be allowed to carry concealed weapons around in Australia. Sure. So I’m in the Lindt Café in Martin Place, and I’m supposed to be glad that three or four other patrons can pull out guns and turn the whole place into the Gunfight At OK Corral. Thanks, David, you miserable numpty.

One hopes the idiot Liberal voters who thought Leyonhjelm was their candidate (because his “party” name included the word “Liberal” and he had the dashed good luck to draw column 1 on the Senate ballot paper) and therefore accidentally awarded him a Senator’s salary for three years, will have learned from their mistake and ignore him this time around.

But I’m not holding my breath. After all, Liberal voters in my electorate (Warringah) look likely to re-elect failed Prime Minister Tony (Knighthood for Prince Philip) Abbott.

Yes me too Arthur! Though I’d still vote for a statue of Tony Abbott to be installed at the Manly corso, sitting on a park bench in the throes of feeding seagulls:)))

Meanwhile in Pittwater, I received a letter from one Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP telling me that if I wanted to be a loyal Liberal voter then I should pledge my second, third and fourth preferences to the Christian Democrats, the Shooters and Fishers, and Family First! What’s the derivation of the word “bedfellows” anyway? might it actually be literal?

Sounds about right to me. A loyal Looters Party voter is not too far removed from the Holy Rollers, the Loony Shooters and the Tiny Preference Party.

“Strange bedfellows” is of course literal in derivation. 🙂

MacKellar that is – now BB’ s gone I suppose the average Northern Beaches voter might not clock who their default choice is supposed to be, hence the letter.

Still, I’m looking forward to tomorrow, mostly for the cake stall at the Loquat Valley primary school which graciously hosts our polling booth. Home-made toffee with 100’s and 1000’s!!

I adore Hugh Mackay and squeed over someone else quoting him! Well done!

Don’t knock Tony Speedos Abbott: he’s doing his best to maximise non-LNP pollies in parliament, so he’s on our side the way KRudd was on the LNP’s side. Tones may be personally responsible for a few extra minorities and independents in the senate after the double dissolution, making Turning Bulls regret his attempt to reign supreme over (and not be held accountable to) the unwashed masses.

I laughed myself silly over the Chaser’s stunt as did the man in my life who’s also offended by Wicked Campers.

Steve Biddulph, my guru when raising my children, had a bit to say on Eddie Macguire that also applies to David Wowser Hippocrite Leyonhjelm.

You forgot to mention that he threatened to call the police on the Chasers. And that he and his wife apparently felt threatened by unarmed comedians although Davey is pro-guns.

Great to see you’re back blogging hard with a vengeance! The Wicked vans make me think because I too make misogynistic jokes. I don’t know exactly what the litmus test is between power imbalance jokes for pure promotion and ironic power imbalance jokes to point out the absurdity of the power imbalance, but I try for the latter and that’s my defense, your honour. The Wicked van slogans are only attention seeking.

I gave Eddie a piece of my mind on my blog, as did so many others who see right through his snake-charm, but I’m not sure he’s going to change his ways. Why should he when he was just re-elected President of Collingwood? Collingwood will incidentally also be the proud patriarchs of a women’s netball team from next season.

I’m now trying to write about the candidates for my local electorate of Lilley (where Wayne Swan has been moping around since the series of unfortunate events). One of the candidates is from LDP, whose leader is the Wicked David Leyonhjelm. There seems to be an angry elitist streak in the LDP which I find fascinating; essentially we only need big government because of all the stupid people who belong to a different species and if they can’t take care of themselves without the politically correct high-tax nanny state, then let them f*ck off and die. And their ^$##&#&ed kids too. I’m sure they’re not that bad. My local candidate doesn’t seem to be, but I think the party group think is somewhere on the spectrum.

Thanks to you and the Chaser girls and boys, I’ve now filled my holes of LDP knowledge and will celebrate by spray-painting an olive-branch message on my car for David Leyonhjelm.

The exercise was named, somewhat grimly perhaps, ‘Exercise Reaper’. The real Reeperbahn is, I understand, in Hamburg, Germany. It is famous for the (predominantly female) sex workers who sit in the, er, … shop … windows facing der Strasse.

It is an odd thread, even by Twitter standards.

Prostitutes on display? By whom? The authorities, out to shame them or their own pimps, displaying the “merchandise?

Then a number of folk persist with the notion that they are Geisha, not sex workers, despite the heading to the pic saying they are prostitutes.

It’s especially hilarious to read that he threatened to shriek for the police, he who is so vigorously opposed to any intervention by any agents of the state.

Wicked go against the very principle of graffiti, which is to do with spontaneity and the inspired guess. We have them up the road and most of the faux graffiti just doesn’t work for me, although I think you’ve cited the worst examples of the excess, most of it is just bland, hesitant and clumsy.

Will not comment further but instead observe Dark Matter and her observation re Steve Biddulph, a man who has been unpopular with some feminists, yet to me has only ever said that we must understand and honour feminism, grasping why it has emerged and why it thus llegitimate, not grumbling about it and instead blokes using the example to clear some of the cobwebs from their own minds.

Back in the day Steve Biddulph wrote some stuff that the queer community *might* object to (suggesting that gay guys missed out on good male role models as children so now seek that as adults) but most of his stuff was sound parenting.

He’s against violence, for sane, sound parenting. I don’t think I read his Raising Girls because I bought a book that — from its cover — claimed to be associated with SB but wasn’t. It was ok in content then SB had the book recalled because they made huge sales BECAUSE of the cover & association. Later he brought out his own Raising Girls, by which time my own daughter was nearly an adult. But I read Secrets of Happy Children and the sequel when she was a baby and again years later. All sane, sound parenting.

He stands for the right stuff, all for respecting children, respecting one another and against violence. He’s particularly against violence towards children — including corporate punishment — with a view to heading off domestic violence before it begins.

I’m not sure if his latest edition of Raising Boys would make the same comments regarding homosexuality. I don’t recall thinking his comments were homophobic, merely posing a hypothetical but with a view to fulfilling that need therefore “curing” boys before they go down that path. It’s been years since I read it. Looking back without re-reading, I think he was otherwise sound but I’d like to see those comments retracted.

Is BIddulph against the brainwashing of children by and for religious ends?
Does he support school chaplain scam?
I seem to recall MTR singing his praises.

We are surely *all* for non violence towards children, but harm comes in many forms.eg >Cory Bernardi and Abbott were once children. Some might argue their petulance shows they still are.

We need religion out of public (all?) schools, out of vulnerable children’s lives, and away from govt.

At the same time, children can be hideous and adults feeling powerless to exert any other kind of authority might well resort to the smack. Thank god mine are adults and all that is over. 😀

Aesthetics is all, although can abhor the aesthetics of something and still consider it a diamond, for a glimpse of its real worth when almost entirely obscured by Megatherium shit ( eg, if you are a farmer looking for fertiliser, you will toss the diamond).

You second sentence has me in mind of Socrates, who when told he was considered the wisest man in Athens, replied with the shrewd comment that, ” All I know is that I know nothing”.

They got Socrates in the end, but not until he was seventy, which was a ripe old age back then.

Dark Matter, a good try. Steve Biddulph has been around for a while and turned up at a time when the sort of discussion we are having here involved something much less explored than nowadays. He had a fair try at de-centering, which can be challenging and it is basic with him that you don’t attack feminism or disregard the legitimacy of women’s criticisms of the System…his insight is that men would do well to assert themselves, as many women have done, to break down or deal with internal social conditioning and that women should be seen as allies, not obstructions.

The risk here is of course that the discovery by men that they are also “manufactured” to some extent may lead to a retreat to self justification and as we have seen from some comments here, some also deciding that Biddulph is only about male apologetics which is a bit contempt prior to investigation-ish.

In other words, a man who has discovered that men must make adjustments to change is seized on by the Right as an individual calling for even worse reaction and from radfems as a voice advocating the very things he opposes.

As for the rest, riveting conversation involving JW and and FG, what more could a reader ask for?

As for smacking, a non verbal form of communication involving an altruistic desire on the part of a parent to communicate to a child that it is not the centre of its own universe to the exclusion of all others, for its own sake too, as to later life and fitting in with other people.

Is there anything more abject than watching a feeble parent in a supermarket unable or willing to take on a brat throwing a tantrum?

    Like

    • Dark Matter Zine July 1, 2016 at 6:34 pm #

With my daughter in particular, the best way to deal with tantrums was to NOT give her attention. Those “feeble” parents may, in fact, be dealing with the tantrum in the best way possible in a public forum before going home and removing privileges.

Strangers getting involved makes things much worse, like the times strangers told me to give my daughter what she wanted so she’d stop throwing a tantrum. Standing up to that kind of interference demonstrated that I was not feeble. Capitulating even once to my daughter’s misbehaviour made the next 10 times unbearable because she escalated her behaviour. She was an absolute terror.

I used to tell my son I’d buy him yoghurt as a treat if he was good in the supermarket. On a few bad days I had to get through the checkouts and carry him and the groceries out with him screaming because I followed through. I wasn’t being feeble, I was meting out discipline. And dayum, it worked. It only happened a few times then he reined in his behaviour. To the casual observer I may have appeared feeble but my tactics worked.

You shouldn’t judge others’ discipline just because you are pro-violence.

    Aaaagh,
So Biddulph is not driven or guided by his underlying religious views or the patriarchy of the/a church.
    Good to know.

I still wonder why people distance themselves from their own ‘religiosity’, rather than call out the bad shite within?

    Is it self ‘Judas-ism?”

I’ve done both: I’ve gone to church leaders and confronted them about church and leader abuse. Now, like many others, I distance myself from them because, as far as I’m concerned, they’re not living out Jesus’s teachings, they’re more like the religious system in Small Gods by Terry Pratchett: worshiping the system, vying for power, being destructive instead of living a truly spiritual life in accordance with their own teachings.

This election is agonisingly close. The count shows several seats too close to call, with only “our ABC” bravely calling every close seat for the government. All through the election coverage on Seven and Nine the count has been around 60 seats each with the rest undecided. Aunty would have us believe the Looters have 74 to 66!

Is it Anthony Green trying to prove he is (always) right?

Whenever I get thoroughly sick of Morrison I go channel surfing – Tour De France, Wimbledon and Seven & Nine’s coverage.

It is still too close to call. Labor may still form a minority government with the independents.

Why would you want to inflict a Hansonite senate on Labor?

The worst news is Hanson has the possibility of a second senate seat..this is a severe blow.

The other exceptional thing is something not directly related to the election and that is the extent to which the Murdoch hack now running the ABC has reduced it to a lying tabloid laughing stock.

    What I (re) learned

Labor would actually have won if they had a less union hack, but too late now.”They” will never learn.
So now the opposition has to play the long and calm game, and let the govt self destruct.Labor must look like the big kids in the room which is going to be hard.

The only long term hope for long term ALP led govts is if the CFMEU and other militant unions are jettisoned. Can’t see that in this millennium.

Of the top 12 issues voters were concerned with the environment was not mentioned.During the campaigns closing moments you would be right to think the GBR is the only environmental issue in Australia.Getups influence has run its course.Petitions are yesterday.Without voices challenging the ‘growth at all costs’ dead end,and calling for a stable population , the end game trumps all this temporary disraction anyway.
If Abbott and Hanson behave as expected, Aust can expect more Man Monis to crawl out of the swamp.Ant nest poking is the preferred sport of the lunatic fringe.
As for the senate generally Xenophon will become the new Meg Lees and let all sorts of perverse LNP shite through, and I think Rupert (or his man) might be wining and dining with a big fat cheque book with the representative swill.

I believe if Labor are stupid enough to EVER want a sliver of a majority and a hostile senate makes me believe, the maturity to see this through may not be there anyway.
Wong was her usual banal / weak ineffective marshmallow baseball bat hard woman. She talks the talk of nothingness and has been walking it all her political life.If there wasn’t a bucket of pus sitting next to her all night, she would have been invisible.
Cassidy got it wrong a few times, the state LNP govt backlash theory for one, did not stand up for long.
The people have spoken. They still have no idea what they are trying to say.

Labor 69 to Looters & Nutters 64. Twelve or so in doubt – allow the same proportion and Labor will have 75 or 76.

      Geezuz, spare me.
Not sure if you are desperate, deluded or working for the LNP.But only a goose would want to inherit a senate with a Lambie and possibly two Hanson’s (no Lazarus) in it, while Murdoch still controls the media and the LNP agenda.

& The real Nick Xenophon is yet to be exposed.Do you think the power won’t go to HIS head?? Plus his new underlings could very easily jettison him and do a Lambie, go Indy,, and vote with the LNP-each and every time for a few bits of gold.I am no way sold on NXT as a party by any stretch.

Like I keep saying, DQ, when push comes to shove you are a footy team voter.
The quintessential labor faction apologist who puts the political needs of Labor, furlongs in front of what is for the greater good.
      But that’s OK.

What Labor needs to do to walk the talk, it has clearly shown,it won’t.
      It can, but it won’t.
What a waste of what little talent is left.
The greens will lap this all up.I’d be surprised if a few ALP aspirants did not jump on the ‘loony(as you call them bandwagon.

Right now Canberra needs to come up with a way for QLD to change its name to New Texas, to secede, and then give them to Indonesia. They have no right to call themselves ‘Australian’ any more.
We could swap out the entire population of New Texas for asylum seekers, who seem to value the right to vote.

              You too?
I can see the enthusiasm here for wanting the ALP to implode with this senate in this toxic morph. It stuns me.
I’ll let the reality sink in before I conclude the cheer squad has lost the plot.

Whichever govt is formed has to deal with and be tainted by the senate we have.Locally and internationally.
Both of the far right factions (LNP and LNP lite=ALP) are currently intimately ‘massaging the ghould called Hanson. ‘Imagine the peril to come to our community from her resurrection in the senate in regards to security.
Imagine the race hate that will now be unleashed.

Me? I say let the Liberal Party wear this mess, they enabled her.Twice now. The pain of the LNP and this senate won’t last long.Or Labor can take the reins, and inevitably foist another Abbott era on us by going in head first. They have Ripert on the case FFS.

It beggars belief any thinking person would want to marry their future to this senate..

Shorten has said diddly about the Hanson pox, so he is as desperate as the fux across the chamber to be a career politician. That is not leadership.Remembering speeches is not leadership.
Who wouldn’t love an old school Labor govt, but wake up ppl. They have gone.Disappeared.
Almost off the map to the far right, just behind their mentors.

I think now that the dust has settled Brandis et al will be praying the ALP forms govt, and if the sentiment here is any indication, he may get his sinister wish.Be careful what you wish for.

Look, doesn’t it seem that many of us already know quite clearly the intentions of the Coalition, something the poll swing shows up.

Might it not be true that it is now so late in the game that we have had to block them by any means possible, even if Labor is little better, to buy time, hope against hope?

Oz looks pretty on the outside, but underneath it could be dying as a democracy with no longer an alternative apart from Labor, which has been quarantined in the Use Only In Emergency Cabinet.

It might not be that late in the day, but then again it might be, on this long haul back from Stalingrad.

                  Labor forms govt.
Conservatives get into the heads of dumb senators,They vote to suit a Tea Party agenda, not even aware they are.
                  (Dirt files will help)
Rupert runs the usual ‘Labor are dysfunctional” agenda.Govt implodes.
Tea Party get the reins,Abbott comes back, they get in via a Murdoch campaign like no other.Rules as a majority right wing gov and senate with more Hansons etc.
Labor(the poxed version we have now) refuses to reform and stay in the wilderness for at least two terms.
By then we will be so socially, ecologically and economically bereft we will be unfix-able.But go ahead, step into a bear trap. The pain is transient.Innit?
