Politics. What is it good for?

I don’t know if there are people out there as fed up as I am with this interminable election campaign, with its interminable commentators making interminable commentary and engaging in interminable speculation in between interminable gotcha moments, and what in the name of all that is good and great and human, is the bloody point of it all?

Politics, the art or science of government, has become merely the art or science of winning and holding government, as is irrefutably evidenced by the last two leaders of this country whose overweening ambition was to become Prime Minister, without any idea of what to actually do once that personal ambition was achieved. I’m not partisan: there’s a persuasive argument to include Kevin Rudd in that narcissistic leader pool as well.

Caretaker Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull recently plumbed new depths of sog with his sepia video of himself as an infant astride the shoulders of his single dad, as if to reassure voters that loving his dad, who left him a property portfolio worth some $2 million, (he probably would have loved him even if he hadn’t: I’m not the one drawing false equivalences here) somehow qualifies him to lead the country.

This humongous non sequitur makes me question, yet again, Turnbull’s much-flaunted promise to treat the punters with respect as a means of distinguishing himself from his predecessor, that lunatic (to quote Turnbull’s father-in-law and former attorney-general Tom Hughes, even though the old man took it back last week) Tony Abbott. It is difficult to take back having described someone as a lunatic, especially when the original comment rings with far more truth than does the retraction.

Then on Friday morning I looked at Twitter only to find a photo of Pauline Hanson or her doppelgänger peeing into a cup at the football. Well, I thought, the day can only improve but I was wrong because election.

Hanson is not welcome in the parliament, thundered Turnbull, which is an astoundingly  stupid comment because if she’s elected she’s in the parliament: this is a liberal democracy and politicians can’t refuse entry to other elected representatives you’d think Turnbull of all people would know that and apart from anything else, he pissed off innumerable Hanson supporters who took the comment personally, as of course anyone would at the prospect of their elected representative being ostracised in a parliament where everyone is meant to be equally representing everyone outside of it.

Hanson retaliated by observing Turnbull to be arrogant and I, for one, find myself agreeing with her on this if nothing else. I don’t agree with her (or her doppelgänger) crouching on their haunches to pee into a cup in a football stadium: women can actually pee standing up (with or without assistance, see image above) and in such a situation it might be more seemly to do just that. Or there’s always bush wees, as we’ve taught the young ones in our family bush wees are good, until we realised they thought we meant peeing in any bushes anywhere anytime rather than peeing in the forest, but anyway.

It signals the end days of a society, said Aristotle or Plato, I can’t remember which and am in such a state of election-induced lethargy I can’t be arsed using my Google finger, when tolerance and apathy become the dominant public sentiments. Are we there yet?

There is so much one can hardly bear to see and hear: the unending violence against women, the cavalier destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, the determination to mine the country into eternity, the neglect of and disinterest in our most vulnerable citizens, the wicked scapegoating of waterborne asylum seekers, the increasing privilege and entitlement of the haves: how can my one vote possibly have any real effect on any of these sites of heartbreak?

As Bob Dylan observed, the only thing I know how to do is to keep on keeping on, a line I have on many occasions found useful and here we are again. Our politicians are a sorry-arsed lot on the whole, at least the ones who claw their way to the top. We have not yet created a Trump, but I don’t doubt it’s within our capabilities and neither does Jonathan Green in this gloomy piece.

But all is not lost. I can see some use for that Shewee thing, in the kayak, yes definitely. I don’t attend footy matches but there are traffic holdups on the Pacific Highway when you’ve forgotten to pee before you left home.

It doesn’t seem at all remarkable that a post on the usefulness or otherwise of politics should end up with commentary on urination, so I might just leave things here, wish you all well for the next few weeks of shameless propaganda, and take myself back to the couch to continue my binge re-watch of Mad Men. Ah, they knew how to treat women back then. No Shewee for you, sweetheart.

“I don’t know if there are people out there as fed up as I am with this interminable election campaign”

    Oh Good Dog YES!!

I know I have been super busy with work and life, but, in the past I would still have taken time to blog about something that happened during a campaign, even if it was a smaller little keyboard thumper at 4am in the morning. But this campaign, half the time I can’t even be arsed to have a whinge on Twitter to distract myself while I wait for some work to upload on the interminable internet connection we have (thanks for that too Malcolm).

I know that is wrong, I do believe every vote counts and believe me, when you live in a super safe blue ribbon LNP seat for decades, surely that is the definition of optimism? BUT this year, this election, I’m with Jen, I am fed up with this interminable election campaign and it’s hold on to power at all costs, truth and decency be buggered 😦

I am not sure if I will vote this election. I normally go to Canberra to hand out howtos for the Greens because we are in a stupidly safe electorate for the LNP, but for some reason I am reluctant this election. I don’t know why really.
I sometimes scrutineer in Canberra, and last election more than ever before people wrote on their papers rather than vote. I think that there is a tremendous disengagement that unfortunately favors the two old parties.

It may not count in your electorate but it may count in the Senate; and there is value in the national percentage vote – the more the better to assist in throwing out this unsatisfactory government.

          Vote.

And two months of no government?? Surely that proves the irrelevance of any government. Sack federal government and give the public service a charter like the ABC. They can’t do worse??

Ah, the joys of penis envy. 🙂

A certain golf club received a complaint from a woman member about men peeing on the course (near trees, one supposes). The committee considered the issue with great seriousness, and decided that it was only fair and equitable to extend the same privilege to the female members.

As for the politics I agree with Jennifer.

Vote for the Team which was lead by the lunatic if you like. And please be advised that if Turnbull loses Abbott will be leader again straight away, whilst if Turnbull falls over the line, Abbott will challenge within 6 months and may well win, to become PM again. (Avert!)

Actually, may I be permitted to humbly contradict? You indeed DO have a (micro) penis, in the form of a clit, a little extension that provides the same margin for delight for you as my dinger for myself.

It does not come in enlarged form for women, because women never evolved an outside fixture for peeing, having mastered the art of hover.

The clit is not a micro penis, PW, the penis is a distorted clit.
You must know I am obliged to make this argument.
Anyways, every human foetus starts off female, proving my point that the penis is an enlarged clit.

You have survived your bout with the flu and are back to your cheerful “usual”.

I did check up the last couple of days, thought you might be hovering about the place.

I remember this peeing problem with girls/women and remember a dear girlfriend of mine who loved to get up and about and wander through scrub. The inevitable would happen. She’d then have to find a place to squat and sometimes I had to hold her hands so she didn’t teeter, in some locations.

    Marvellous woman, she was.

I don’t agree we didn’t find our Trump.. the person was Tony Abbott.

As for the election, so far defined by what it shows of human nature and the latest example is this :

    http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/jun/11/election-2016-liberal-party-candidate-resigns-brothel-melbourne

Of course I worried about you. You’ve had a few adventures the last few years and the flu is not an ideal way to live through several days a the best of times.

As to Trump /Abbott, I will have to think in more detail, but for the moment I offer the following as suggestive: Both are arrogant, ago scentric, male, sexist, deceptive and insensitive.

Both are pathological liars, although am sure at least some sister’n claim this is the case with ALL men, both push the ludicrous bald-faced and dislike female TV Presenters.

Trump is abrasive, but I don’t think he has the same deep chip on shoulder pathology as Abbott, who is irredeemably ruled by his subjectivities…Trump is probably merely a common or garden asshole and eccentric who never had the time to sit down and think through things.

It’s a bloody shame politics can be used as a vehicle for change for the better which is badly needed in Australia today. We have a choice between the evil LNP and Labor basically so I am choosing Labor, not because I believe that they have all the answers, but to stop our country becoming a carbon copy of the USA. Labor are much more humane than the LNP whose main policy is to give $48 bn of taxpayers money to corporate Australia who pay little to no tax. Labor care much more about “people” and people vote. The Greens are more progressive and I would like to see a swag of their environment polices adopted but the Greens do do have enough support to win a swag of seats in the House of Representatives so I’ll have to settle for Labor and hope they stick to their promises because I know the LNP won’t stick to theirs, do we all remember “no cuts to health and no cuts to education” followed by an $80 bn cut to same…

I don’t require a plastic funnel to pee standing. I am not alone, either – many women can pee standing up. Just not usually discussed, besides it is anti-capitalist because there exists a shewee industry wanting to sell plastic stuff.

However, I do require a space where I feel safe – squatting in bushes makes me feel safer than standing in public and peeing against a wall. But that’s just me.

Women aren’t taught/encouraged to pee standing – we should be.

We really weren’t discussing the election were wee?

Yep..Townsville commented on that. If the Greens and Labor slung as much muck at the Tories as they did each other, maybe the country would be back on track for a better politics.

It is so futile, progressive politics split down the middle again on pragmatism versus idealism. Left hand knoweth not what the right hand doeth, etc.

The Greens represent core beleifs in the abstract, Labor the application of core beleifs in a real world setting, with all its flaws and the mutual opponent smiles contentedly into the red glow of the winter hearth.

Without naming the entities in either case, one of which we now know independently to be Parakeelia, single nominated software suppliers are claimed to be referred to in the Department of Finance entitlements manual as the only entities for which electorate allowance expenditure reimbursement claims by Members of the Parliament will be approved!

I’m not pretending to call the result, Hypo, nor even endorse the NT News’ call of it. I’m merely giving an opinion as to the extent of derision in which I see the genuine electors holding the present government. I haven’t seen a government held in such derision since 1975 before the Dismissal.

I am quite confident that with the as many as 30+% of enrollments in any given electoral Division being those of persons who do not/no longer live there, any genuine electoral result determined by electors voting in accordance with law could be over-ridden were those out of place enrollments to be mobilised to claim votes.

A former Electoral Commissioner gave a roundabout warning as to this situation in a submission to an inquiry into the electoral rolls in 2000, but due in part to the fact that there had seemingly never been any official cross-referencing of the population ELIGIBLE to enroll with the number of persons actually enrolled, the extent and seriousness of this situation remained un-noticed.

The major consideration from a perpetration point of view, in such a circumstance, being that as to how to ensure such over-riding does not get to be recognised for what it is, not one as whether the erstwhile genuine result itself can be over-ridden.

I think that is where we are at. Do the powers behind the throne risk discovery, or make the best of going with the flow, that is the question.

I suspect they cannot afford for Australia to succeed or at least remain stable as a benchmark for comparison.

I see neither Turnbull nor Shorten as being at the apices of pyramids. I see only one pyramid, with no resident Australian at the apex.

I guess its now a question as to how desperate they are, exactly how much ‘proxy’ vote can be deployed, and how well they have assessed the Australian temperament.

The sheep who voted for Tony Abbott’s mob three years ago (yes, that’s all it was!) are still feeling sheepish about it and have for 9 months been tempted back into the fold by Tony-Abbott-in-a-better-suit, aka Malcolm Turnbull.

But the arrogance and dismissiveness of Turnbull have re-emerged to haunt the Looters & Nutters Party. He says he will win. He always has, hasn’t he?

Consider the substance of the two main parties and admire the brave policy-driven approach by Labor, compared with the “cut and slash, but let’s look after our mates” approach from the Looters. There really is no comparison.

No, they didn’t cut off their noses to spite their faces.

‘”Information vacuum” Murdoch, City of London, Cameron and a host of other upper-class types, the ones who bought Britain the suffering of the Meltdown and after, did that- the people are just reacting to the pain the amputation caused.

I liked this quote from your second link, Paul:

“If the broadcast media stuck to their ‘shape of the earth: views differ’ policy, our EU membership might disappear as a result.”

The problem with offering Yes/No voting options is that it implies that there are two legitimate options. The same has occurred with the treatment of climate change in this country. The mass media have sought out the negative arguments and broadcast them as if they had equal validity to the views of 99% of climate scientists (ie the ‘pro’ case).

Some issues should be a matter for decision by the elected representatives in parliament, properly informed and advised by the public service.

    Timeline June 2020:

Following the 2017 break up of the UK, the Duchy of Greater London (now ruled by Duke George VII of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha [formerly Prince Charles] and Lord High Mayor Boris Johnson) announced today that they would hold a plebiscite on whether North London should have to put up with South London any longer.

The Lord High Mayor advocated the “Leave the Southern Bastards!” campaign saying that most of the terrorists lived south of the Thames and that after the bridges were cut there would be no need of the wall which was planned, at great expense. He said “Trump’s Wall cost $1.5 trillion and still didn’t keep those #@@*** Mexicans out of USA, so I’m sure we can do better for less!”

The poll will take place next Tuesday.

It appears that any human being who is a citizen over 18 years of age can vote. Taking away the vote from idiots imbeciles and morons (technical terms for those with IQs under 30, 30-50 and 50-70) would be a start, though in the UK:

‘”idiots” may not vote and “lunatics” only during their lucid periods. Those compulsorily detained in psychiatric hospitals, for example, cannot vote.’

But it seems morons are eligible, as are lucid lunatics, aka RWNJ.

In Australia anyone who voted for Cory Bernardi, Lionhelmet etc should lose their vote, and those who voted for Abbott Bishop and Mirabella should be suspended for two elections, hoping they’d come to their senses eventually.

          We live in hope.

Abbott was a known (far) worse option than Turnbull now is.And look what happened FFS.
I predict therefore the LNP will profit from this.Hate the greens as ppl will, the circuit breaker might need to be a green dominated senate, although my opinion of Di Natale is he is more about him, than the grass-roots green ethos which is almost invisible these days.

The ad blitz is due any day soon.I brains will be fired with Turnbull praise and Shorten attack ads.

Let’s face Australia changed under Howard, when he harnessed a fragment of Hanson-ism and tissue cultured it into a permanent legitimacy of hate as a ‘right.’
The USA has done it, now the UK.Almost lemming like in its outcome.
This is where the developed world finds itself.Staring at its own arse as it implodes.Even basic democracy is unrecognisable.

Know this, electronic voting will see dead democracy, less participation and more hacking/rigging/fixing.Why do ppl think both majors want to go that way?

A few elections of ppl putting names to their electoral choices might bring Australia back to the centre, but as long as govts appoint their own muppets to AEC,ACCC,security agencies, military,GG etc we just get another arm of another right wing agenda..Be it ALP or LNP.

Perhaps we need it more obvious here. In France there are actually terrorists to be reckoned with, to justify the all the militarisation and expense thereof.

In Turkey, you KNOW there is a coup going on, with the guns and grenades and things,

Here, the only evidence of terrorism is the massive presence of intelligence/surveillance and its expense and a virtual coup here has been greeted with a bored belch and fart as people turn their heads anew to reality tv, quizzes, soapies, sport, sitcoms, 4 whwwl drives and talent quests.

Abbott will be back.He rejected the invite to the latest Mal team party and at the 1st post election meeting he slow clapped reluctantly while the rest whooped and cheered.

Let Hanson face the public spotlight, frequently.

Given such exposure, provided there is the much vaunted ‘balance’ of participants, her brittle ideas will be brushed aside. Keeping her at a distance, she has far more allure to uninformed and insecure voters.

The duplicity of calling out bullying at a school level and then switching the rhetoric to ‘hide it behind the free speech’ clause is indefensible. The calling of politicians dog whistlers on one hand and hounding them down here and elsewhere and then taking a fenced position is telling. We are above hate speech. Those who choose to basket free and hate speech in one basket

The ‘ignoring’ is exactly what allowed her to re-oxygenate.
I’m not the one ignoring her,I am calling her out, and saying that political silence and/or opportunism is enabling her.As is allowing hate speech,or justifying her with the bullsh*t excuse she is entitled to say what she wants.

Jesus you are a hypocrite.I have proffered solutions and questioned the failure to act earlier, while you have endorsed the status quo. You’ve made that crystal clear.
You say Hanson was rounded on on Q&A.?

Self reflection and Pauline Hanson don’t sound right together, but I could be wrong.

You raise points that have been bothering me, Hypo. But no action can be taken against Hanson unless somebody lodges a complaint, as happened with Bolt.

I agree. Ignoring her seems like agreement with her.

Sam was good, it was like I was watching a comedy show, plenty of food there for Micallef…

The Muslim brothers inviting her for Halal lunch was priceless.

    Controversy. Argument. Conflict. Balance.

I’m all for free speech, but some speech is freer than others. And we – or rather the mass media supposedly providing us with balanced information – do not need to provide a platform for those who expound extreme views. In the name of Balance.

The solution to bad free speech is better free speech. The alternatives have been tried over the last several thousand years and its ‘success’ is written in blood, the blood of millions.

“The solution to bad free speech is better free speech”
Only if it precedes the inevitable.
For millennia we have excused inhumanity .
There is no corner left for the intellectual to hide. And yet the smartest of us still keep insisting on writing epitaphs as a solution.
Who did not see this coming FFS?
Who thinks the re-enabling of Hanson is going to end well for anyone?

      Again.Count me out.
She is a product of those who sat on their hands,or who wanted to use her poison to make ground, more so than those ignorant desperate brainless frustrated dweebs who voted for her.At least they lifted a finger.

      Get some gumboots DQ.
