Let them eat toast

Class War

By now, you’ve probably all heard the tale of Duncan Storrer, the man on $20,000 a year who asked assistant treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer on Qanda why people much wealthier than him are getting tax breaks and he isn’t.

Let them eat toast, replied O’Dwyer, but those mofos can cost up to $6000 so two good people began a fund-raising campaign for Mr Storrer to get himself a toaster bigger than his very kitchen because this is class warfare and it’s time to pick your feckin side.

Newscorpse immediately launched a savage attack against Duncan, despatching Princess Caroline Overington to find Duncan’s estranged son who when found had nothing good to say about his dad so obviously, dumbo, Duncan had no right to ask his question because his son hates him. No, I’m not linking to Overington’s piece of trash.

Chris (doglover) Kenny’s son  has also publicly proclaimed his hatred for his father but Newscorpse doesn’t see that as an impediment to Kenny’s authenticity. Apparently earning over $80,000 a year restores any authenticity one might lose as a consequence of your children hating you.

(There are in fact very many impediments to Kenny’s authenticity: his son’s hatred of him is not one of them.)

According to another Newscorpse Princess, Rita Panhini and some of her followers, the ABC needs to be pilloried for allowing Duncan entry to Qanda in the first place, and no government minister should appear on that show again until the audience is subject to an income test.

Newscorpse then attacked Duncan for not paying any net tax, overlooking the fact that Newscorpse pays no net tax either but  that’s OK because Newscorpse has a $6000 toaster it uses to burn to a feckin crisp poor people who ask inconvenient questions so it’s exempted from tax which is only for poor people anyway who have to pay it as punishment for being poor because the doctrine of predestination teaches (read this, it explains a great deal about the LNP) that if God wants you to be rich you’ll be rich and if you aren’t it’s because you’ve pissed him off so NO TOASTER FOR YOU.

Not yet satisfied with the zillion buckets of their own stinking piss they’d poured over Duncan, Newscorpse discovered his rap sheet and plastered Duncan’s offences all over the Herald Sun’s front pages today. Duncan has a record, ergo Duncan may not ask a question on Qanda about income tax.

Yes. This is our country.

Let us not pay attention to the entirely legitimate question Duncan asked, a question many millions of us would dearly love to have answered by Treasurer Scott Morrison or, if we have no other choice, Kelly (let them eat toast) O’Dwyer. Let us instead go through the questioner’s trash cans in a mammoth effort to discredit and invalidate the perfectly legitimate question  he is perfectly entitled to ask from his seat in the Qanda audience upon which he is entirely entitled to settle his bum, even if he only earns $20,000 a year, because last time I looked, asking questions didn’t have a means test attached to it.

But wait. There’s more. Newscorpse chief political editor at one of its many sordid publications, Ms Samantha Maiden, will later this month appear in court to be sentenced for drunk driving and leading police not once but twice on a drunken car chase along the Hume Highway and surrounds. In spite of being found guilty of all charges, Ms Maiden has continued to write her regular column, indeed, in one of her first tweets after appearing in court she called a respected economist a dickhead, rather a reckless judgement from an individual who’d just been found guilty of drink driving and attempting to escape not one, but two police pursuits.

For reasons not immediately apparent to this writer, Ms Maiden’s criminal activities do not invalidate her opinions, while Duncan’s do.

Why have the frothing Newscorpse contingent gone after $20,000 a year Duncan like dogs in an advanced stage of rabies?  Because Duncan’s question threatened them so profoundly they have to try kill him stone dead, or at the very least, silence him and anyone like him, forever. This is a message from the LNP to the country: Stick your neck out and we’ll set our backers onto you, your family and your life till there’s nothing left of any of it. We will exterminate you.

This is a class war. Make no mistake about it.

In case you still have doubts, yesterday Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull took flight into the exclusive “gentleman’s only” Athanaeum Club for lunch, after being confronted by single mother, Melinda, on the matter of how hard it is raising her children after family tax cuts.  As the Huff Post reports it:

The visit [to the exclusive club] comes after the PM addressed a Business Women and Working Mothers Forum in Sydney on Wednesday, and not long after he was confronted on the street by a woman named Melinda who claimed his policies were hurting families.

Class war. Gird thy loins.

Yes. Many pretend that class does not exist in Australia, and they are right to a limited extent, in that there is no aristocracy as in Europe nor a caste system as in India. But we have a divide based on privilege, wealth and upon where we live; it is bolstered by access to education and health care. Throughout the 20th century, the movement was towards greater equality through universal health care, pensions and support payments, education which was – mostly – free enough to all.

The reactionaries have of course fought to restrict exclude and wind back all of these reforms, and lately they have been successful in their efforts. The ideas of “user pays” of “entitlement” of “aspiration” have been used to pervert our society to conform to their ideology, as they support the 1% and kowtow to them, in fond hope of joining them.

After all, “how can we be in, if there is no outside?”

The rich get richer, the poor get the picture. Perhaps; they may have the scales fall from their eyes, as Turnbull straightens his top hat.

Newscorpse is among there 579 companies http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-17/almost-600-companies-did-not-pay-tax-in-2013-14/7036324 Duncan was very brave to ask his question, it probably was the first and last occasion that O’Dwyer has spoken to an average Australian and did not appreciate him asking a question that she was unable to answer. In the end there is no logic to insatiable greed, which is why the LNP can never answer a question of this kind.

I am an LNP supporter, you make some very valid points, I defend Duncan’s right to ask that excellent question. Your point regarding tax payments by News Corp concerns me as well, I do believe that the government has a working group looking at the issue of big business and tax.

Well Steve you have that in common with about 50% of the voters, if polls are to be believed. Are you pleased with the Abbott government, now led by the Toff?

Consider coming into the light; turn from the dark side. 🙂

Interestingly, I’ve lobbed here to this after reading Michael Safi and then Amanda Meade’s pieces on the Duncan case at the Grauniad.

They would have been kinder, if not wiser, to avoid the dirty deed as to the fellow.

    He’s on $20,000 a year, not $20,000 a week.

I congratulate you and Urban Wronski (https://urbanwronski.com/2016/05/13/turnbull-show-collides-with-reality-coalition-suffers-massive-setback/ ) for getting to the nub of the matter. I’ve never seen life so accurately mimic art.

The famous scene at orphan poorhouse when Oliver Twist was emboldened to approach Mr Bumble and ask for more. It was only porridge or gruel, probably quite thin, but desperately need to appease hunger and cold. It was a simple humble plea.

The outrage of Mr Bumble and the charity committee was beyond appeasement.

How close it seems to the News Ltd response today. Those of us growing up with Dickens shared his outrage at the hypocrisy and injustices occurring in the Victorian age. Yet it would seem that with all the benefits of widespread literacy, education and communications we have progressed very little in our humanity.

Thanks for that link Dunny. That’s a good piece. Wronski describes well the utter lack of O’Dwyer’s interest in any class other than her own.

And yesterday some silly little bitch journo. harangued Shorten for disunity because someone dared to question his depraved so-called refugee policy and he shot them down.
Even though it’s frigging illegal and people are dying the stupid little bitch asked that dumb fuck question, what is the bet it’s another right wing Murdoch rag moron.

Today we hear that another victim of our lovely policy which must be defended is on life support after a C-section without anaeshetic and her premie baby is on life support as well.

    Fucking butchers and savages.

If the courts won’t protect these people perhaps Lyn White and animals Australia or the RSPCA might.

It does sum up the thread. People have real problems all over the place, but Murdoch and co keep going after the victims, not the perpetrators.

And why? So we remain stalled in a world that decrees there must be victims and plenty of them?

Yes, it is a good piece.

In a funny way, it picks up from the history of tabloid msm from the 60 Adverts debacle.

It is phenomenal, the mental gymnastics executives and journalists resort to to avoid telling the truth.

I recall it being asked, elsewhere, why the did busting of Samantha Maiden for drunk driving did not receive the howls of protest and evidence of forensic investigation from Murdoch that Duncan Storrer received for simply asking a fair question, from his standpoint, as to government so called policy and the emperor’s lack, therefore, of modest clothing.

Late to the post, but this reminds me of a case in NZ a few years ago. The former-beneficiary-now-minister known as Pullya Benefit dredged up and dumped everything she could find about a solo mother who dared question her… then paid an out of court settlement to make the problem go away. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/politics/7482643/MP-breached-beneficiarys-privacy Somehow I can’t see LimitedNews or the munster paying anything for this one, except hopefully their jobs.

It’s not a new trick, but it’s an effective exercise of power, and we’re seeing a lot of that lately.

I’ve been treated to the Daily Terror “expose” once, briefly, and it was not fun. One interesting take-away was the the police don’t give a shit if your voicemail fills up with death threats, they won’t even promise to take them into account if you become a victim of violence. I even got a mention on media watch… to no effect.
