Samantha the Maiden, Abbott, and the supernatural powers of marriage

27 Dec

Sitting in a cafe in Cooma the other day with nothing to read I flicked through the Sunday Telegraph of December 21. Always a mistake looking at the Tele, but my judgement about everything has been off for months, so what’s one more error.

There I came upon a piece by Samantha Maiden on Senator Jacqui Lambie titled “I’m addicted to my Botox.”

I didn’t have a great deal of interest in that revelation but what did catch my eye was Ms Maiden’s description of the Senator “admitting she’s been single for more than a decade” and later in the paragraph “Ms Lambie admits she’s been single since her thirties.”

Admit is a tricky little word. It’s usually understood to mean confess, as in the offender admits. I’m at a loss to understand why a woman has to admit she’s single, or why Ms Maiden poses the suggestion that Ms Lambie has committed an offence against society by using that word to describe the woman’s relationship status.

Then a few days later came this opinion piece in the Age, questioning Prime Minster Tony Abbott’s references for new Social Services Minister Scott Morrison.  He is a decent human being and is married with two little children, the PM declared, ergo the man has learned a depth of compassion the unmarried without children cannot possibly have achieved that more than qualifies him for his new portfolio.

There are echoes here of claims made by Morrison’s previous area of responsibility, the Department for Immigration and Border Protection that simply by being an elected member and Minister of the Crown, Morrison has a unique and profound insight into community standards and values that qualify him to exert unprecedented powers while remaining absolutely unaccountable to anyone.

I have to say here that I disagree with the author of the Age piece when he claims that not having children If anything … strengthens your sense of understanding and empathy for others. That’s just as silly as the claims he’s disputing.  Understanding and empathy aren’t dependent on one’s relationship status or parenthood, and it’s just as possible to argue that both situations can lead to all kinds of negative behaviours that aren’t in the least understanding and empathic.

Having spent Christmas time with seriously feral toddlers I can attest to that. The youngest, who has just learned to say “No” and “Mine” spent much of his time snatching his brother’s presents off him then trailing round the house, overwhelmed by the noisy stupidity of it all, alternately chanting and whining  “No No No” and “Mine mine mine” at nothing and no one while his brother yowled hideously at the injustice of it all. Tested beyond endurance by our little ones, the adults took to drink. That we all got through it and still love each other is no testament to our compassionate natures but rather to the quality of the champagne.

Anyways, what both Maiden and Abbott’s comments emphasise is the ideology subscribed to by public representatives of the orthodox political and social class whose beliefs continue to dominate Australian society. All one has to do is demonstrate one has a relationship and children to be accepted. How one actually behaves within the family unit is beside the point as long as one is seen to inhabit one.

And this brings me to Richard Flanagan’s Booker prize-winning novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Unfortunately I am far from home in the Snowy Mountains and don’t have my copy with me so can’t directly quote. At one point Flanagan lists the horrors of a long marriage in which neither partner has ever really known the other while one has been chronically unfaithful, and the stunting effects on the offspring of such a union. He ends this lengthy account of unexamined misery with two words: A family.

It’s chilling.

Here are some mountain wild flowers  to cheer you up.

Last things first.. (whooops..Johnson just hit another six)..

Morrison and co of course DO, apparently, have a “unique and profound insight into community standards and values”, although Howard was the past master at reading and massaging the night terrors of Australians over the previous fifteen years.

As for Lambie, having rebelled, she will have to expect this sort of murk in future..they wont forgive it from a woman.

Samantha Maiden, of course, is a notorious practitioner of the Murdoch Dark Arts over decades and is just the sort of person I’d expect to see mounting this sort of malevolent sludge against an opponent conscious or otherwise, of Murdoch interests.

I find Maiden almost intolerable on the rare occasions I watch the Drum and she’s on. The rest of the time I ignore her.

Jennifer, season’s greetings. I agree with everything you write in this piece. The fact that Lambie is single and Morrison’s a public nuisance has nothing to do with on the one hand Lambie’s failure to not be single (unaccountably according to antediluvian social precepts) or Morrison having done his duty in the bedroom (ditto). We (you and I) might argue forever about significant areas of politics and policy, but if you ever want a placard waver on the point to make here, just give me a bell 🙂

Love the photo by the way. Those beautiful mountain wild flowers are a real tonic.

Sorry, stuffed that up. Blame the post-Christmas cheer. I meant to write “Lambie’s failure to not be in a relationship”.

Morrison’s babies were not the product of him doing the business, they were test tube born.

What is it with politicians, have they so lost their humanity they can’t even breed properly?

And before you all jump on me, Marilyn will know exactly what I mean.

No one wants to have babies with them, not even their partners, they are planning an escape from the relationship and their bodies go on strike….who’d want to have the Monster’s offspring.

How nice to see you here again Helvi. And I agree, I sometimes wonder how women manage to mate with these men.

Yes, this is like rape, US style.

TheTea Party types know that a woman’s body “shuts down” if its REAL rape, so if she got pregnant after an assault, obviously she was only making a fuss and “wanted it” all along.

        8 degrees worked it out.

How can it be that Lambie is not imbecilic, barefoot, pregnant, one on hip, one at the teat as well as the one in the oven. Now, that sort of writing really gets to the heart of the pathology of people like Maiden, for sheer spite and sly slander and Jennifer Wilson is dead right, the article is evidence of a sadly unbalanced person.

Jennifer, the flowers were very pretty.

Next time, can we have a pic of seven kittens and a Dalek?

I suddenly got the hots for Ms Lambi when she stood up for a principle or two against those she initially thought stood for something. (Steady…it doesn’t mean I agree with her views…) Oh, yes, they’ll bring her down. Goodbye, square peg.

As for Methanescum, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he relied on test tubes (nothing against IVF in general). I picture a lot of repressed religious types holding test tubes in denial in cottages…

As some commenters suggest, not every child is the child of its ‘father’. With some it is obviously so, with others some better evidence may needed.

As with Billy McMahon’s offspring . . . “You can have any man you want, Sonia; any man you want.” I doubt a DNA test is needed to establish his non-parenthood.

Regrettably, Tabbott’s girls seem to be fairly true bred Young Liberal yuppie types. There seems to be a factory somewhere that churns out the Barbie Doll clones.

I would be afraid of knowing where to put my feet walking through those flowers other than to walk way round. Beautiful. (reminds of the Brindabella)

Maiden and the rest labour under the ‘majority accepted mis-apprehension’? that a unit is not a unit unless it is actually a two that makes up a unit. Does she believe that in order to be a unit one must be bound in all senses of the word to an other? That an individual can only be filled/full-filled with and by the auspice of an other?

Thank you for your wisdom and ability to impart Jennifer. And to write.

Sorry, I have to ask. Are we all lost to David Horton? Are you able to say? That we can know him no more? My fear is so. Love

Observing the execrably wooden “Christmas message” from the PM and his wife, this emphasis was again on family as if this is how people are to be defined. Beginning with reference to himself (as he usually does) he described his own family celebrations.
The two finished with a joint chorus,” from our family to yours, happy Christmas!” Does he have no awareness that many Australians do not live in the idealised romanticised family?
