Dear Everyone,
As we charge headlong into 2013 thank you massively for being here through 2012.
This new year will be chocks full of political pus, so we will never be lost for a topic to lance.
May we all be safe, may we all be as happy as we ought to be, and may we all stay well or near enough to it!!
(The Spanish is for you, Gruffbutt)
31 days to February.

Hi All
If you spend too much time blogging, perhaps you’ve better rename it: No Place for Sleep.
Oh, and a request: No political comment! Imagine how much time and angst you’ll save…

I look forward to 2013 and seeing Tony Arsebot ground to a pulp by the grinding wheels of Ashbygate.

I look forward to a reborn Labor party re-embracing its roots and ICAC exposing and ridding us of factional bullies and any criminal elements therein.
(But then I ‘am’ an idealist!)
Abbott will self destruct soon enough,if his ‘loyal ‘ friends don’t garrotte him sooner.
I think you’ll find Ashbygate might just take a few faux Labor victims with it.
Parliament House is made of glass, and in cases like this both sides keep rock throwing down to a bare minimum, for obvious reasons.
Most of the huff and puff of the lawyers for both sides is pure bluff.
Trying to set up a scenario scary enough to instigate a back-down.
Oh yes and I look forward to a surplus, carried to the people on the backs of flying pigs.

WEll a surplus is organised theft so why would we want one. There is no provision in our constitution for anything like stealing too much money from taxpayers while not providing services.
Dumb Jenny Macklin today claimed that single parents had to be forced below the bread line to save money and make things fairer so they get jobs and the kiddies can see that at least one parent works.
Well that is very nice for Jenny Macklin but she is talking about single parents, I reckon and know for sure that they work harder than Macklin does.
And these cuts are so we can build an illegal colonial prison on Nauru.

Re-embracing its roots is difficult. The problem for the left is that the big ticket social justice and equality items which were its agenda in the 1960s and 1970s have largely been achieved : medicare, schools and universities, adequate welfare and pensions, access to contraception, equal pay for equal work, greater representation in the parliament and boardrooms for women, and the like.
Not saying it is perfect, nor was the agenda fully achieved, but the rightists have been pushing back on nearly all fronts since the 1980s and the left has been on the defensive, protecting the gains made.
The right have been running the dialogue, mostly on economic jargon and propaganda, ever since Reaganomics and its like raised its ugly head in the 1980s.
I detect a turning of the tide, arising out of the disasters of the GFC and its ongoing effects; the Tea Party have had their day in the USA and it is dead and decomposing, but they just don’t know it yet. These things take time. A week may be a long time in politics but real change is a decadal thing.
But we live in hope.

Trouble is we are going backwards on human and civil rights.

Happy New Year, Marilyn. Yes, it is frustrating. The right have run the agenda for decades, and just to get elected the (otherwise) leftist parties have had to move right. I’m often pushed into defending the (almost) indefensible, but I wait for the day when we can go on the offensive on human and civil rights once more.
The rightists have had their day; solidarity, comrade.

I will never defend the indefensible, like jailing children because their parents brought them here to seek our protection.
Bowen and Gillard are racist cowards, they did not have to go down that path.

Fwiw, I’m sympathising with the conversation involving DQ and Marilyn. We might be drowning in cholesterol, but our good fortune has hardly made us more grateful than we should be.

Gruffo,
if you are serious about S American travel, you will need this essential gem, my friend.
“Generalmente, los martes, un par de chuletas de cordero bien asadas.”

Or (you choose)
1. ¡Para servirle!
You’re welcome (used in the sense of ‘At your service’)
2. ¡No hay de qué!
You’re welcome (used in the sense of ‘Don’t mention it’ or ‘No problem’)
3. ¡De nada!
You’re welcome (used in the sense of ‘It’’s nothing’)
4. ¡Por nada!
You’re welcome (used in Costa Rica in the sense of ‘No problem’)
5. ¡Con mucho gusto!
You’re welcome (used in Costa Rica, means ‘With pleasure’)

Mmmmmm…you’re making me hungry…I do miss my Argentine parilla. (Yes, I know I’m missing something else here…)
Funny, I never got to use de nada much, being the dumb tourist recipient most of the time. I’m hoping to have a more active role if I make it back there…and other parts of the globe.
Muchas gracias, Hypo.

The first line pertaining to broiled chops on Tuesdays -was something I came across in a second hand 20 Lesson Spanish language book, many years ago.It has stuck with me since as a Pythonesque quote.I means seriously, who TF would ever need that phrase!!?
The other bits below that, were just me saying ‘you are welcome’, as in you are welcome I handed you that essential piece of travel dialogue.
I mean, (inverted logic) Who on earth would NOT want to order broiled chops on a Tuesday in a foreign land,I ask you?

Broiled lamb chops . . .That brings it all back to me, Hypo! My father used to love short loin lamb chops, and I think we ate them five nights a week for 20 years or so! If you are what you eat, I must have been baaaing up there with the best of them. 🙂
buenos dias y buen apetito!

Thats why people pull out of the party, you are reduced to being a cheerleader for someone who is picked by the back room boys.”
