Scott Morrison and “diseased” asylum seekers.

Below is a media release  issued yesterday by Scott Morrison, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.

Typhoid cases on latest boats highlight the risk of Labor’s border failures

Monday 27th February 2012

The confirmation of two cases of typhoid for asylum seekers on recent illegal boat arrivals to Christmas Island highlights again the risks and consequences of Labor’s failed border protection policies, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison said today.

“When illegal boats turn up in our waters there will always be the risk that people on these boats will carry serious communicable diseases. The more boats there are, the greater the risk of serious diseases presenting,” Mr Morrison said.

“Last year there were 56 cases of communicable disease from those who had arrived on illegal boats. These cases included everything from Tuberculosis and Hepatitis C to Chlamydia and Syphilis. These latest cases have now added typhoid to the list,” he said.

“Of greatest immediate concern is the risk to Australians living on Christmas Island, including children attending the local schools, as well those who come in direct contact with asylum seekers including our defence forces, Customs and border protection officers, federal police, detention centre workers, health professionals and immigration staff.

“These Australians have been living on the front line of Labor’s failed border protection for the past four years.

“Despite the best efforts of our health professionals and other officials responsible for dealing with these situations, there are no guarantees that the arrival of people carrying these diseases could not lead to an outbreak on Christmas Island or the transfer of these diseases to the mainland. This is the risk of failed border protection policy.

“In the past three months more than 2,100 people have turned up on 26 illegal boats. This is the highest number of arrivals over summer on record and 50% more than Labor’s previous record two year ago.

“Labor’s largest ever summer of boats followed their decision to introduce mainstream release of asylum seekers into the community, with support payments, free housing and set up packages worth up to $10,000.

“As long as Labor’s soft policies on our borders continue, these boats will continue to arrive along with the risks they carry, including people with serious communicable diseases,” Mr Morrison said.

The following communicable diseases were detected in immigration detention facilities on Christmas Island from 1 July 2010 to 6 May 2011 –

Diagnosis – Total
Chlamydia – 4
Dengue – 2
Gonorrhoea – 1
Hepatitis B – 10
Hepatitis C – 3
Malaria – 1
Pertussis – 1
Shingles – 3
Syphilis – 29
Tetanus – 1
Tuberculosis
(active) – 1
Grand Total 56

And what was the incidence of disease carried by illegals arriving by plane?

You have to go medical screening before getting Visa…. And you have to have an insurance to cover the cost of medical treatment

So what’s the thing with typhoid? A dreadful gastro with dehydration and often death the result?
So Scott is upset that we are not offering effective treatment to folk unfortunate enough to be down with it, or he just wants the barriers up real quick so he doesn’t cop a dose?
As usual, thick with criticism for everyone else, but no idea of his own as to how to deal with asylum seekers.
Better he shuts his mouth then, rather than trying to spook the government into another cycle of over reaction.
Actually it really smacks of scabby deep south racism and an underlying slur against the hapless beggars on the boats. Perhaps he thinks refugee people get ill just for the fun of it.
He is, really, using sick people to pursue a sick agenda.
This is the sort of person they should recruit for a new series of, “Send them back where they belong”. A good stay in a slum and a nasty dose of Delhi-belly might make him more circumspect when it comes to the exploitation of people less fortunate than him, who’s lot he has never remotely unlucky enough to have to experience at first hand.

Well I might be the voice in the wilderness on this blog and this issue has troubled me with which way to lean for a long time. On the one hand we have amnesty posting a graph on facebook showing that all the arrivals fill only a tiny part of an MCG crowd, on the other the Australian Bureau of Statistics have a graph showing the policy effect on arrivals that clearly demonstrates that the current policy has lead to a massive increase in arrivals – no politics, thats just a fact. The question no one is asking is “Should Australia be some kind of santa claus to troubled countries in the world”? Where do we sit on this. Having confronted this at the cliff Face (Im part of an entertainment group that visits detention centres at their invitation and met some of these arrivals) I don’t buy the poor unfortunate asylum seeker story. These people have enough money to pay a huge amount to escape admittedly sometimes dire conditions. A lot seem to be political refugees from changed regimes. Certainly they arent broke, desperate or victimised. Given that, we then have to ask the question – Is it our job to give them what is effectively sanctuary? Some of the source countries have no visa or migration arrangement with Australia and hence the boats and planes and puting on being accepted are the only choice they have is Australia is the desired destination. A lot it seems choose to stop at whatever interim country they are at instad of making the full journey. It was interesting talking to them and hearing their stories. More than a few have families here, or brought them with them, Some are simply single wanderers (largely males) looking for a better life anywhere. But where should Australia sit on this? We have our own local regions to deal with. I think the parochialism big brother helper/policeman Australia displays to New Guinea, Fiji and other troubled pacific states (if welcomed which it isnt always) is about as far as we need to go personally but other think we should have an open door free for all. Not good governance and really the easy and lazy way out to me.

For fucks sake, we are talking about a massive increase from 17 a day in 2009/10 down to 12 a day last year and up to 19 a day this year.

      Will you people stop it.

4.5 million people come here every year.

Equine flu come on jumbo jets and got through because AQIS were too busy watching porn, swine flu came on cruise liners.

I wonder what we would find among our homeless street people.

All it proves is that processing procedures are working.

So…. Assuming that the other three-month periods had, say, only 1000 people arriving each, that makes 5000 people over the year in which those infectious disease stats were collected.

Picking the first disease on the list, that means there was a prevalence of chlamydia of a tiny 0.08%. Contrast that with our prevalence of around 10% in sexually active adolescents, or 2-3% in the general population, and we’re not exactly looking at an epidemic waiting to happen.

There are more syphilis carriers, which is not surprising, because disease patterns vary. Looking at the numbers again, that’s 0.58%. Australian syphilis data is based only on formal notifications (so possibly tip-of-the-iceberg), but is maybe 0.007% overall (incidence per year); much higher in certain disadvantaged populations. However – syphilis is readily and pretty rapidly curable; it’s just a matter of screening and treating.

Hep B? Around 0.8% of Australians have chronic hepatitis B; and this back-of-the-envelope messy-stats method gives me more like 0.2% amongst these asylum seekers.

TB? Aus: 1-2% (includes asymptomatic carriage). These figures: 0.02%.

I suppose that is why we intercept the boats and put them into quarantine.

Why are the opposition allowed to get away with claiming that border protection has failed when it obviously works well?

Just how many refugees/asylum seekers make it to the mainland undetected? Any? Any at all?

John Howard gave more than half the population depression and anxiety ( for more than a decade) which lives to this day.
We went nowhere to get it.
He also started the spread of the dreaded plague outbreak of Redneck Myopia, which still thrives today.
Not to mention what his antics have done in Iraq etc.

Sorry Scott your fake medical alarm is falling on deaf ears.

Now that the ABC has been ‘officially’ ordained and Fr Uhlmann has Baptized all the Non Catholics at Aunty (All three of them), there is no media left.
Just sewerage with keyboards and right wing apologists.

Uhlmann still sees his ‘Mission’ in life, is to bring down Gillard.
He has now morphed his style (haha) into that of Tony Abbott and sounds like a scratched record.
      Amateurish at best.

38 quintillion naughty, scheming, diseased, obscenely rich boat people have left their war and poverty stricken paradise,to lob up uninvited.
Boy are the next arrivals gonna be disappointed when they find out the Chinese and Indians own all the good bits.

Maybe we should line the dock with land mines to make them ‘illegal immigrant’ queue jumpers feel more at home?

Just reading the Scott Morrison Appalls his Colleagues post.
Irritated by the panel, I dropped QA this Monday; Bishop preening herself before the show was sufficient antagonism.
In doing this I must have missed Tony Jones displaying a flash of the old vigour in tracking down some quite blatant lies by omission by Bishop on Morrison’s vile propaganda and want to say I feel deeply indebted to whoever put this up, including the transcript of the exchange between Jones and Bishop.
