At No Place for Sheep we’ll lambaste anybody! We have no favourites!

Email: noplaceforsheep@mail.com

My other blog is The Practice of Goodness, where I post stories, poems, songs, fragments etc.

No Place for Sheep is an eclectic blog that covers politics, society, satire, fiction and fun stuff. I sometimes share it with friends who are informed on a great variety of topics, so there’s an interesting collection of views and writing.

I’ve had two careers, as an academic and scholar, and as a psychotherapist. I have a PhD, and now work at a little of both my careers.

I’ve published short stories in several anthologies, academic papers and book chapters, frequently on the topic of human rights, a central interest of mine. My interests and writing are wide ranging, including cultural analysis such as the paper on Tony Soprano that appears on this blog.

I read crime fiction for fun, literary fiction, and critical theory when I need to work my brain hard. I’m hardly ever without music, from Leonard Cohen to rock to country to classical.

Leonard’s recent Australian concert was my highest point of 2013, and I have been described as an L.Cohen tragic. This does not disturb me, though some say it should.

I’ve written for On Line Opinion, Suite 101 and ABC’s Drum Unleashed. In my spare time I write fiction, some of which you’ll find on the blog, and some of which is published in anthologies.

I live on the edge of a world heritage listed rainforest with isolated beaches, and love kayaking, swimming and bush walking. The above photos is taken in the back yard.

When I get cabin fever and can afford it, I head for other countries. If I could, I’d travel most of the time. A nomadic life has always been my dream.

Thank you for your great blog. Recently I’ve been reading bloggers I really disagree with just for the buzz! But your writing is so reasoned yet provocative, I don’t need the cheap thrills any more.

Dr Wilson, You’ve certainly hit the nail on the head with one powerful blow.

I was recently invited to write an article for the Tasmanian Times about an Alderman who had his computer stolen and when retrieved by the Police, they went fishing and found a deleted document that successfully sailed through the courts and got the man onto the sex offenders registry for possessing child abuse material.

    ‘Shocking Beyond Belief’ – http://tiny.cc/aenkk

The next day it was revealed in the media that the document in question was an 1880 book called ‘The Pearl’, which was legally available in bookshops, libraries and can be downloaded over the internet.

In my article I could not help but see the connection with the treatment of Bill Henson and the recent vitriol that led Crumb’s wife in France to fear that he could be assassinated like John Lennon, by some fanatical zealous nut-case fired up by the witch-hunt.

It is concerning that Kevin Rudd, when Prime Minister in 2008, fired from the hip where Hanson was concerned, revealing a wider underbelly of immature and fundamentalist values stalking the culture of Australia and as this article graphically points out, fuels a much more basic abuse of children in the consumer society, by warping our societies values when it come to seeing art.

This must result in a dumbing down of our emotional intelligence.

This highly-strung environment can also lead to an Alderman in Tasmania ending up on the sex offender’s register for possessing a legal 1880 document. It is all enough to make anyone fear what will happen to them, let alone Crumb or professional artists in Australia.

Though he won the appeal, the Alderman’s life can never return to normal. His reputation has been burnt in public like a witch by the inquisition.

We may wonder how many innocent people have had their lives ruined in Australia by this level of insane zeal, or the degree of damage that is being caused to the arts industry in this nation. Being an industry, this damage translates into financial loss to the nation for no good reason.

Driving Crumb from Australia paints a pretty bleak picture of our cultural landscape.

It is high time the fanatical zealots were subjected to scrutiny and their warped values exposed.

Wow, Kim, I just read your article. I agree with you, there needs to be a concerted and unrelenting exposure of these lunatics.
I’m reminded of the artist whose painting of her young son naked from the waist up was rejected by the Sydney Children’s Hospital for display there, because they feared someone would be offended by the image of a child without a shirt.

I’m outraged by the campaigners’ insistence that we all must adopt a paedophile gaze. That’s not my way of looking at anything, nor should it be recommended as anybody’s. There’s something really bizarre about demanding that we all become perverted in our mind, imagination and perception in order to prevent perversion.

    Dear Dr Wilson,

I have written an article, included below and published yesterday, exploring the recent Labor leadership maelstrom, which I found quite disturbing:

    http://www.independentaustralia.net/2012/politics/only-gillard-plan-was-to-knock-off-rudd-and-become-pm/

On another front ~ as we enter the age of the carbon crisis, I suspect the will of the people will come to play a critical role, as individuals awaken to the needs and the path of action needed.

I suggest that we invest our amazing resource bonanza in building solar power stations in space and with unlimited stellar energy, get ahead of the crisis. I have written on this with my article ‘Space Development the Key to Our Survival’:

    http://www.independentaustralia.net/2011/environment/avoiding-calamity-by-looking-to-the-stars/

We certainly need a strategic vision for the future of this nation, if we wish to avoid succumbing to the growing dominance over us of China and also Indonesia, just as we need a global strategic vision for human survival globally.

    Yours sincerely,

    Kim Peart

Is the Truth about Kevin out now?
    =========================
    Kim Peart

The whole of Australia was puzzled at the time, that a first term Prime Minister could be removed so swiftly in the dead of night.

Should there have been a judicial inquiry into the matter, to put all the facts on the table, so Australia could know why?

Unfortunately, the affair was hushed up, the facts locked away and as if there was a normal process in train, Kevin Rudd was given the highly responsible position of Foreign Minister, representing Australia to the nations of the World.

If Rudd was such a chaotic Prime Minister, why would he be given such a highly important position and in the Cabinet?

There was a buzz about gaining our first female Prime Minister, but there were matters unsettled and as it turns out, quite unsettling.

The months roll by, Labor suffers a massive loss at the last election and only just secures Government with the aid of independents and a Green.

The Foreign Minister makes his mark on the world scene.

Then in the course of his duties, rumblings from Down Under lead to Kevin Rudd’s shock midnight resignation from Washington and the Prime Minister declares a leadership spill.

The outcome of 71 Labor Caucus members against Rudd and 31 for is now history and Rudd goes to purgatory on the back bench to be an ordinary MP.

Will this be the end of the matter?

Of all the stories covering the Labor leadership maelstrom, one observation stood out above the rest like a lifeboat from the Titanic.

A straight-shooting report from the former member for Bennelong, Maxine McKew, who successfully cut down John Howard’s bean stalk and felled that former giant of the Liberal Party, offered new and penetrating insight into the turfing out of Rudd as Prime Minister.

Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, this well-known and highly respected former ABC journalist put her credentials on the line, when observing how Julia Gillard successfully persuaded then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to drop the carbon tax and noted, ” At some point the advocacy turned into a threat.” [1]

McKew points out how it was made clear to Rudd that the survival of his government was conditional on abandoning the Emissions Trading Scheme.

This proved to be a fatal blow to the Rudd Government and led directly to the leadership coup two months later, in the midnight of the knives of June 2010.

McKew concludes, “There was only ever a plan to knock off Rudd.” [1]

If Maxine’s observations can be believed, we may now wonder if the chaos we hear of Prime Minister Rudd’s managerial style, was in part fuelled by the simmering agitations aimed at his removal.

Julia Gillard had clearly demonstrated her ability to influence Rudd, even to overturn a core promise made to the Australian people.

That there was no judicial or Labor Party inquiry held into the affair, may now be understood, as the truth could have become an indictment of all with blood on their hands.

If those who made that midnight pitch for power have a guilty conscience, this could help to explain the high level of frenzied vitriol beyond all reasonable political language, that has poured forth from Labor ministers in the past week.

Only by screaming could they drown their inner voice, which was telling them they were wrong; and rather than retain the dignity of government, elected representatives of the people became a rabble, hell-bent on killing off Rudd’s return to the highest office.

When a mob screams from the top of a pile of stones that they are right, there is no reasoning, simply rule by force; and those who dared not run with the mob would be at risk.

Then a very strange thing happens within hours of the leadership ballot.

One of the key players in Rudd’s demise as Prime Minister, Senator Mark Arbib, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Small Business and Sport, resigns as a minister and from the parliament.

This singular act from one of the victorious mob is quite puzzling and might be best explained in a story by Tony Wright in The Age, where he wrote, “Graham Richardson, for years the hardest and most feared of the NSW Right gang, put it more succinctly on Sky TV. Arbib, he said, had told him on the phone a few days ago that ”he was sick of being covered in blood”.” [2]

Considering the popularity of Kevin Rudd and that he remains in Parliament, it is hard to imagine that the test of Labor leadership is dead and buried, especially now that the events of June 2010 have been revealed as a totally avoidable coup, that Labor ministerial behaviour has been shown in public as disgusting and especially as the Australian people are left feeling cheated of the leader of their choice.

With the Labor ship of State now hulled and slowly sinking, we may wonder how long it will take to go down, opening the way for the next conservative government in Australia.

Deck chairs can be moved around, but redecorating ministerial offices to hide the blood of the coup, may not save the ship.

There is little chance of an inquiry now to reveal the facts of Rudd’s demise as Prime Minister, but the people will have the final say.
