Morrison hammers another nail into decency’s coffin

28 Feb

Shadow Immigration Minister Scott Morrison’s latest stinky brain fart that everyone should be warned when an asylum seeker is lodged in their neighbourhood is stomach churning on a number of levels, but perhaps the most alarming is that there are people living amongst us, and likely quite a few, who agree with him. Obviously it’s such people he’s seeking to engage with, and he will succeed.

The ALP has well-exceeded the barbarity of Coalition asylum seeker policies. What once seemed so shocking now appears comparatively tame. Morrison has to dig deep to compete. The sad reality for our country is that both major parties believe that hostility towards asylum seekers and refugees is a vote winner, and there’s enough of those votes in play to make this race to the bottom worth their while.

Morrison’s statements are propaganda. There is little point in engaging with their content, except to suggest replacing the term asylum seekers with Jews, or Muslims, or women, or even privileged white males and see how it sounds. His message is that for current political purposes, asylum seekers are the group which will be scapegoated. Scapegoating is employed as a legitimate political strategy. There is no difference between what Morrison is doing, and the early propaganda of the Third Reich. Call Godwin’s Law if you like, but sometimes it really is the only appropriate analogy.

The only hope we have is that there are enough thoughtful women and men in both major parties to loudly protest this unrelenting moral decline on the part of their leaders. The  sickening willingness of so many politicians to remain silent in the face of this vile othering is contemptible.

I say we go with it. Notify everyone that Australia is adopting new and more compassionate policies towards asylum seekers, coming to a borough near you, and then let the bigots themselves claim asylum in a new migration zone we can open up in Antarctica!

They’ll have a white Antarctica policy obviously, and we’ll see how palatable whale meat really is I expect, but I don’t think with that lot than even the gay ones will be able to claim land rights, do you?

I will name a sure bet if you want atomou.
Gillard will announce (via a very generous backbenchers loyalty to the re-election cause, by saying ‘an extra $50 for low income people is warranted’)
          (The bait was laid yesterday)
Yes Julias born again generosity- sans surplus -is only hours way.Trudging her weary way through down trodden hordes, like a duck on a mission, through urban shopping centres, in Western SDydney.
Australia will see her don a newly crafted Epithany Fascinator, and then she will deliver, in an emotional speech to rival Geoffrey Rush, the good news.
          “Poor people need Labors help.”
          OM? it’s a miracle,I tells ya.
Too little too late Julia. This little jaunt will just help the voters out there see in flesh the very creature who justifies their selection, come September 14.
In fact as well as underlining the defeat of the very seats Gillard is trying to claw back, all she will do is convince voters to add an exclamation mark to their already seething vote of “No thanks”.
And that will carry some very, very heavy collateral damage for faux Labor. But they cannot EVER,EVER claim they weren’t warned a thousand times over.

          Pencil it in,imminent welfare rise.

Agreed about the bet and I’ll name you another. The announcement (“Look, I’m new and here’s the $50 to prove it”) will happen during a televised conversation she’ll be having with Ellen Degeneres who will be gracing us with her buffoonery in a couple of weeks’ time.
You’ve heard it here, first, folks.
Surely she must have discovered by now that she had the name of the place Bush-like wrong: It’s Sydney not Disneyland!
But, don’t underestimate the power of a good barrel of pork. It only ever failed once: Howard’s last one; and this time, it has a slight dose of added incentive which just might effect the requisite affect: The mad monk is just too mad for some. The average punter, alas, sees this as a Mafia offer. The money or the bullet.

I forgot to mention that Julia will make the above announcement as a deflection of Degeneres’ question on gay egalitarianism.Julia will also announce her new view about the mining tax as an answer to Degenes’ question, “what do you think of Assange’s attempt to stand for the Senate.” Julia’s new view is that since the miners don’t like paying any extra tax at all, she will scrap that tax and as a recompense, will increase the welfare to the big polluters.
And to the question, wil she ever countenance processing refugees in Oz, she respond with, “some of them are muslims, you know.”

Gillard made these decisions early in her term, so it was not even necessary to do it to get votes because the election was so far off.So it gets down to her belief system.
There are plenty of things Aussies don’t want, and won’t/didn’t vote for, but various governments installed them.
Did we vote Howard out for the GST?
          Did Labor repeal it?
Governments are meant to lead on the greater good and the current treatment of boat arrivals is anything but, Helvi.
You are right about the minority thing, but given that religions are still free to discriminate and Gillard has assured a minority (ACL zealots) it will continue, I don’t think it can be argued form a point of bums on seats.
Our mining is creating future climate refugees.Which ones will be welcome?
The plane arrivals or just the white ones?
And speaking of minority decisions.Which members of the community were asked if it is OK to strike us off the map to deter boat arrivals?
There is not even a waterlogged piece of high ground 1mm high available to Gillard when it comes to boat arrivals.Morrison, on the other hand, is snorkelling, nay free diving at the bottom of a sewer.

    And yet!
There’s one party that is even more stomach churning and it’s burgeoning smack in the heart of the country that is often called “the cradle of civilization” and the “womb of Democracy.” Golden Dawn is a neo Nazi Party which, at this very moment is “holding classes” of “Greek History and Greek Ideals”, their version, of course, that excludes the rest of the planet and which tries to instil a bloody minded nationalism in its youth and towards that goal, it is in the process right now of recruiting school kids, as young as six. Their history, the history of this party of thugs, against the refugees is a bloody one, one of vigilantism, of beatings (the refugees and those who help them) and of “disappearing.”
    http://greece.greekreporter.com/2013/02/27/golden-dawn-recruiting-schoolchildren/

But you’re totally correct, JW. The ALP has abandoned in no uncertain terms and in glaring hubris, the most important of the values that have given it birth and the right to go on existing up until this day. It has, these last Gillard years, (incidentally, like their brethren in Greece PASOK) forfeited that right to exist.

I am with Hypo here. The best we can hope for now is an Abbott win but with an excruciatingly tenuous alliance with a strengthened Greens.

        It’s not that clear-cut Helvi.
A vote can also send a signal.Whether the elected government accepts that signal, is another thing. And they ignore it at their own peril. Then there is the double dissolution threat.
That is all hypothetical, but entirely possible at this stage.
At some point in time people will weigh up whether they reject Gillards principles and constant betrayals or not.And whether they can live with that choice’ morally or spiritually, if you like.
Whatever the outcome that’s what we will inevitably live with.
And if it is Abbott I doubt he is stupid enough to go berserk in a first term.It takes a good while to settle things in.
If Abbott has to try to dominate the senate on a DD based on the carbon tax etc, it may just blow up in his face and ruin his trip.
Aussies are probably as shallow as you say, but every now and then they love to dish up a clear and concise wake up call.At this stage in our history we may actually get two in a row.Gillard and Abbott.
And if we are not in Australia’s longest campaign, why is Gillard camping out to campaign in W Sydney?
Why is it no-one believes a thing Gillard says?
Pretty obvious really.I,like amny Aussies gave Gillard a fair go and plenty of time/opportunity to lead us and make us proud of our first female PM.
What a terrible let down she became.A total political disaster. And let’s face it, is a woman who is actually told what to do by the likes of the despicable Howe, really a woman, anyway?
What a pity this will drag the Labor party/movement,unions and some very good Ministers down with it.

As for Morrison.I reckon he’s jealous of most of faux-Labor’s refugee policies.

You nailed it, Sheep Lady! Stomach-churning It is! Why Morrison (or anyone) would think putting asylum-seekers on list in the same way as sex offenders are – also questionable in the age of web-assisted NIMBY vigilantism – can in any way be justified is a conundrum. It is bottom-feeding populism at best and, at worse, severe self-induced paranoia.

The problem with refugee policy is that both major parties are playing to the ignorant, essentially selfish, portion of the electorate. In this regard it would appear, on Morrison’s statement, that the Coalition has regained the lead in this vicious race.

It’s unlikely to see the day as legislated policy, however. The courts have a proper regard for human rights.

I won’t even bother arguing with Hypo on this one.

What is readily apparent to anyone not a dedicated Gillard hater is that she is doing quite well in difficult circumstances.

The parliament is functioning well, despite the opposition grandstanding at every opportunity. Legislation is being passed almost without hindrance.

The economy is still excellent by OECD standards and the difficulties are such that just about every western nation would be pleased to have them, and not their own.

Reforms in Health Education and Welfare are about as forward as you could expect given budgetary constraints.

Refugee policy is an interesting one, as practice differs greatly from rhetoric. Australia affects to strongly discourage asylum seekers whilst accepting all genuine refugees.

The feral media has run a concerted campaign from Rupert’s dungeon since late 2009, and the fellow travellers have joined the chorus, seeking to back a winner.

Legislation is not a matter of bulging numbers but quality of thoughts and deeds; and so far, it has almost all passed because it is barely discernible from that of the Opposition, in spite of their and her rhetoric before the megaphones.

Nice windmill you’re tilting at :).

On legislation: You’d know that most legislation has functional bipartisan support – give or take a quibble with detail – so its passage through the parliament is no surprise at all.

On the economy: Well, the jury’s out on that (and the OECD seems to be out to lunch). Statistical overburden can mask a lot of unpleasant bedrock.

On the media: The media has never been part of the official liturgy. And sensible people will never want it to be. You think Rupert’s a rogue. Fair enough. You’re free to think. Think about that.

On refugees: I think we’re all agreed, on this blog post anyway, that present policy is heinous and immoral, and that both major parties are trying to win an abysmal race to the bottom. That disgusts me – on a completely bipartisan basis.

As for Hypocritophobe’s daydream that Abbott is going to go soft in his first term, roflmao.
Guess what, he’ll also let the refugees in, too!
The media already have already brainwashed the public on refugees, THAT’s the reason Labor has failed to move.
The media have you so brainwashed you think a half reasonable ALP government should be chucked to reward the dog in the manger.
This is to punish the gullible public who’s fears have been aroused, rather than those responsible for the fear and loathing?
Haven’t you followed Cameron in England and all the rightist governments across Europe? Haven’t you read of the crazy vicious stuff the Tea Party has done to the USA?
I’d loved to have come here and read something intelligible on Abbott/Rineharts bizarre policies for the outback, that undo the Murry/Darling reforms, say.
Or is there some ulterior reason for the constant boostering of the coalition and global fascism here?
        Wake up, some of you.

Rather than repeat my long held view of not rewarding, nor swallowing your spin,(I’m brainwashed? You don’t even look at the Gillard/Howe record. You keep squealing about ‘possibilities’) a policy based on racism and lying,I’ll just say you’re being silly.
          Vote for her.It’s your karma.

Not remotely possible, while Gillard leads or Howe is living.

Mine and probably a few hundred thousand more, who are the very reason Gillard is history. But yes HG,if you want me to admit it’s MHO, then sure.
And add to that the other 40 odd percent who support Abbott et al.
At least Gillard can count on a half a dozen votes here.
            Just not mine.

    No difficult circumstances!

It must be easy to get legislation through, with 72 out of 150 in the Lower House, and 31 out of 66 in the Upper House! Wow!

It must be easy to govern when income is falling and expenditures are rising!

It must be easy to govern when every thing you do is second guessed by the opposition (the media) and the rag-tag that sits in parliament (the Opposition)!

It must be so fucking easy! You fucking do it, you fools!

The claim is not the capability to govern, but the quality of the governance.
The usefulness, and efficacy of any given policy
And the consistency to reflect the ideals of your constituents and your supporters, despite the parliamentary composition.
      So which part of:
“Fail” (on all of those premises), do you not understand.
Holding a steering wheel is not the definition of competent driver.
Leadership is not just saying shit,back-flipping,saying something different, buying some votes and then repeats steps 1 through 4 in any order till you land in a throne.
Gillard (under Howe) did not have to revert to type, but she did.

” What we’ve got here is… failure to communicate. Some men you just can’t reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it… well, he gets it. I don’t like it any more than you men.”

“You gonna get used to wearin’ them chains after a while, DQ. Don’t you never stop listenin’ to them clinking. ‘Cause they gonna remind you of what I been saying. For your own good.”
      *************************************************
DQ, believe me.You don’t want to ‘share’ the box aka political oblivion that Gillard is dragging you along to.

As for the once unfriendly media?Ha.
The media have not been going hard on Gillard lately and you know it.She has a clean run for months, save the reality of her popularity.
If all the MSM did was reveal internal polls, the picture would look far worse and you know it.
The media is yet another bullshit excuse you can’t use any more.
Since Howe spit his dummy and spilt his guts she lost the last vestiges of hope she had.

      I can feel a song coming on;

We’re setting sail to the place on the map
from which no one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
by the light of the crosses that burned.
Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace
and the gold and the cotton and pearls
It’s the place where they keep all the darkness you need.
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby.
      You will pay tomorrow
      You’re gonna pay tomorrow
      You will pay tomorrow

Save me. Save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools. No, no
Oh, save me. Save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools
I want to run and hide right now

Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea
They will leave you drifting in the shallows
or drowning in the oceans of history
Traveling the world, you’re in search of no good
but I’m sure you’ll build your Sodom like you knew you would
Using all the good people for your galley slaves
as you’re little boat struggles through the warning waves, but you don’t pay

      You will pay tomorrow
      You’re gonna pay tomorrow
      You’re gonna pay tomorrow

Save me. Save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools
Save me. Save me from tomorrow
I don’t want to sail with this ship of fools
      Where’s it comin’ from?
      Where’s it goin’ to now?
      It’s just a It’s just a ship of fools

WEll hung parliaments have been passing legislation in other nations for fucking centuries you fool.

Gillard had a set plan, she had a guaranteed majority for that plan and the friendliest of senates.

Nothing fucking difficult about that Doug you dimwit.

Now when you have what Rudd did which was a majority in the house and a minority in the senate desperate to always say no then you have difficulty.

“Well hung parliaments” !!! How do you know they are?

I suppose this parliament is not as well hung as some others, because there are so many women, nearly 30% . It must lower the average.

It was more difficult for Rudd? You’ll have to explain how having a majority is more difficult.

He had a majority in the house, then he had a minority in the senate with the majority of them being liberal sore losers.

          You figure it out Doug.

Anyone noticed the curious coincidence of Morrison’s announcement with a highly publicised court case involving religious extremists who flogged a new member for drinking, lots of coverage, bearded angry guys and all that.
    Funny, that.

No coincidence>You’re talking Morrison. He doesn’t even let recent deaths or funerals get in the way of his message does he?
And I see Mr Abbott is in lockstep, as usual.

Man Overboard : I hope the Navy are nowhere in sight when Abbott and Morrison go overboard from their tinny off Christmas Island. The Loud Hailer or their cap pistol might overbalance their tinny, as they shout “Go Back to Where You Came From!” “Go Back gurgle gurgle gurgle . . .

(Of course, the slogan is too long for the Noalition : “Go Back Home!” is the required length)
