Shadow Immigration Minister Scott Morrison’s latest stinky brain fart that everyone should be warned when an asylum seeker is lodged in their neighbourhood is stomach churning on a number of levels, but perhaps the most alarming is that there are people living amongst us, and likely quite a few, who agree with him. Obviously it’s such people he’s seeking to engage with, and he will succeed.
The ALP has well-exceeded the barbarity of Coalition asylum seeker policies. What once seemed so shocking now appears comparatively tame. Morrison has to dig deep to compete. The sad reality for our country is that both major parties believe that hostility towards asylum seekers and refugees is a vote winner, and there’s enough of those votes in play to make this race to the bottom worth their while.
Morrison’s statements are propaganda. There is little point in engaging with their content, except to suggest replacing the term asylum seekers with Jews, or Muslims, or women, or even privileged white males and see how it sounds. His message is that for current political purposes, asylum seekers are the group which will be scapegoated. Scapegoating is employed as a legitimate political strategy. There is no difference between what Morrison is doing, and the early propaganda of the Third Reich. Call Godwin’s Law if you like, but sometimes it really is the only appropriate analogy.
The only hope we have is that there are enough thoughtful women and men in both major parties to loudly protest this unrelenting moral decline on the part of their leaders. The sickening willingness of so many politicians to remain silent in the face of this vile othering is contemptible.

I say we go with it. Notify everyone that Australia is adopting new and more compassionate policies towards asylum seekers, coming to a borough near you, and then let the bigots themselves claim asylum in a new migration zone we can open up in Antarctica!

I forgot to mention that Julia will make the above announcement as a deflection of Degeneres’ question on gay egalitarianism.Julia will also announce her new view about the mining tax as an answer to Degenes’ question, “what do you think of Assange’s attempt to stand for the Senate.” Julia’s new view is that since the miners don’t like paying any extra tax at all, she will scrap that tax and as a recompense, will increase the welfare to the big polluters.

Gillard made these decisions early in her term, so it was not even necessary to do it to get votes because the election was so far off.So it gets down to her belief system.
There are plenty of things Aussies don’t want, and won’t/didn’t vote for, but various governments installed them.
Did we vote Howard out for the GST?

Governments are meant to lead on the greater good and the current treatment of boat arrivals is anything but, Helvi.

A vote can also send a signal.Whether the elected government accepts that signal, is another thing.And they ignore it at their own peril.Then there is the double dissolution threat.
That is all hypothetical,but entirely possible at this stage.
At some point in time people will weigh up whether they reject Gillards principles and constant betrayals or not.And whether they can live with that choice’ morally or spiritually, if you like.
Whatever the outcome that’s what we will inevitably live with.
And if it is Abbott I doubt he is stupid enough to go berserk in a first term.It takes a good while to settle things in.
If Abbott has to try to dominate the senate on a DD based on the carbon tax etc, it may just blow up in his face and ruin his trip.

Why Morrison (or anyone) would think putting asylum-seekers on list in the same way as sex offenders are – also questionable in the age of web-assisted NIMBY vigilantism – can in any way be justified is a conundrum. It is bottom-feeding populism at best and, at worse, severe self-induced paranoia.
The problem with refugee policy is that both major parties are playing to the ignorant, essentially selfish, portion of the electorate. In this regard it would appear, on Morrison’s statement, that the Coalition has regained the lead in this vicious race.
It’s unlikely to see the day as legislated policy, however. The courts have a proper regard for human rights.

What is readily apparent to anyone not a dedicated Gillard hater is that she is doing quite well in difficult circumstances.
The parliament is functioning well, despite the opposition grandstanding at every opportunity. Legislation is being passed almost without hindrance.
The economy is still excellent by OECD standards and the difficulties are such that just about every western nation would be pleased to have them, and not their own.
Reforms in Health Education and Welfare are about as forward as you could expect given budgetary constraints.
Refugee policy is an interesting one, as practice differs greatly from rhetoric. Australia affects to strongly discourage asylum seekers whilst accepting all genuine refugees.
The feral media has run a concerted campaign from Rupert’s dungeon since late 2009, and the fellow travellers have joined the chorus, seeking to back a winner.

On legislation: You’d know that most legislation has functional bipartisan support – give or take a quibble with detail – so its passage through the parliament is no surprise at all.
On the economy: Well, the jury’s out on that (and the OECD seems to be out to lunch). Statistical overburden can mask a lot of unpleasant bedrock.
On the media: The media has never been part of the official liturgy. And sensible people will never want it to be. You think Rupert’s a rogue. Fair enough. You’re free to think. Think about that.
On refugees: I think we’re all agreed, on this blog post anyway, that present policy is heinous and immoral, and that both major parties are trying to win an abysmal race to the bottom. That disgusts me – on a completely bipartisan basis.
